Hello Wayne,

It's better to print out the next instructions or save them in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.
It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!

1. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller, and Unzip it to its own folder (c:\BFU)RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra Remover.
Save it in the folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Open My Computer and navigate to the c:\BFU folder.
Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

In the scriptline to execute field, copy and paste c:\bfu\alcanshorty.bfu
Press execute and let it do its job.

Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
2. Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

3. Download roguescanfix.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick roguescanfix.exe to install.
This will create a new folder on your desktop called roguescanfix.
Do not use this yet!

4. Download Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):C:\WINDOWS\system32\dcomcfg.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\stdole3.tlb
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\simpole.tlb
  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

5. Boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8.
A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

6. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmdSelect option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart again manually.
7. Reboot back into Windows, normal mode.

8. Open the roguescanfix folder and click: Run.bat
This tool needs internet connection so it can download an additional file to let the tool work properly.
If your firewall gives an alert, allow it instead of blocking it.
Let the tool perform its job.
The icons will disappear temporarely from your desktop, and reappear. This is normal.
Wait until the message Completed script execution is displayed, and click OK.
Click Exit to close down bfu.
Finally: click OK to start the Spyfalcon and/or Spywarequake uninstaller, and click uninstall.
WARNING: You will be asked to reboot your computer. Wait until the uninstallers did their job before clicking YES.

9. Open NotePad, copy and paste the text (in fat) below:REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\explorer\Run]
"dcomcfg.exe"=-

Go to File Menu > Save As, type "all files", as Fix.reg to your Desktop.
Exit from NotePad.

Double click on the file Fix.reg and click "Yes" to merge the file to Registry.

10. Post the report from Smitfraud fix, wich you can find here: C:\rapport.txt by using Add Reply,
as well as a new HijackThis log.

Greetings,
BMThor

Hello Wayne,

Your log looks better, however there are still some things to remove!

1. Did you run step 1. exactly as specified?
It seems to have missed something.
Please repeat the procedure.

2. Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
[/list]3. Boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8.
A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Run HijackThis and check these entries, if still present:O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCShield] regsvr32 /s "C:\WINDOWS\system32\sfg.dll"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PCShield] regsvr32 /s "C:\WINDOWS\system32\sfg.dll"

5. Go to Windows Explorer, find and if still present delete this file (in bold):C:\WINDOWS\system32\sfg.dll
6. Run HijackThis again and post a fresh log please.

Greetings,
BMThor

Hello Wayne,

Quite stubbern, aren't they

Please disable Spyware Doctor, so it will not interfere with the fix:Open Spyware Doctor.
Click the OnGuard button on the left side.
Uncheck Activate OnGuard.
You can reenable it once your system is clean.

1. Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido anti-malware:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Close ewido. DO NOT RUN IT YET.
2. Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and tap F8 before WinXP starts to load and choose Safe Mode.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear.
Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

3. Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
4. Run Ewido anti-malware:
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
    • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
      # This means you will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
      # If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
      # DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
      # If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Save it to your Desktop.
5. Restart your computer in Normal Mode.

6. Perform an onlinescan with panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

7. Post the contents of the Panda scan and the ewido report in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis Log,
by using Add Reply.

Greetings,
BMThor

Hello Wayne,

It looks like the malware may be gone,
let's see what cleaning up your log gives :

Run HijackThis and check the following entries:O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Yqlzkay] C:\Program Files\Ysalsd\Qbdxea.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCShield] regsvr32 /s "C:\WINDOWS\system32\sfg.dll"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto

Close all open windows EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log.

Greetings,
BMThor

Hello Wayne,

Your log looks clean now.

Are you still experiencing problems?

-----------------

Below I have included some recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously ; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

1. Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ on a regulare basis and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer.
This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

2. It is important that you use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorised traffic both out of and into your computer.
Your log doesn't show a firewall running. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it.
If you do not have a firewall installed, please download and instal one of these excellent (and free) products: Sygate
Kerio
Tiny Personal Firewall
Outpost
It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time.
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

3. In order to protect yourself better against spyware, you should consider installing and running some of the following free programs:Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

IE/Spyad
Places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
Make sure to keep your antispyware programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

4. Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is very good and more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has a built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) . If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place
and/or Grinlers tutorial on how malware is hidden and installed
Hopefully this should take care of your problems!

Greetings,
BMThor
