Asus G74/Win7 x64, running Norton Security Suite  Purchased Nov 2011.  are some symptoms...hopefully they make sense to someone here!!:

I was getting some random freezes...complete freezes that forced hard shutdowns.  They weren't TOO annoying, but they got a little more frequent over the last week or so.  Malwarybytes showed no problems, neither did any other similar utilities I have.  I didnt' have any malware/virus symptoms, it seems to be 'deeper' than that; somewhere in Windows

2 days ago, out of nowhere...doing no particular task, just surfing, the freeze happened & quickly went BSOD on me.  That didn't last, it went black, and I could NOT re-boot at all, until I ran the startup/boot recover utility that was offered to me (forget the name, there were 2 options; that or System Recover).

That worked, I ran chkdsk (took forever, fixed lots of things) and for 5 minutes, I thought I might be clear.  But I tried to run the Drive Medic utility in my System Mechanic Pro, and that always BSOD'd me.  Again, most times the blue screen flashes, then you get a "select drive you wish to boot to (from?) and push any button, but when you push any button, the prompt just repeats, so you hit the power button once to close & once to restart, and it boots normally.  I tried to run a Seagate backup to my external drive (whole C drive), but that BSOD'd too...but I did manage to backup all my photos/documents/music/video files independently.

I read up on this kind of problem, and was gonna analyze my dump files w/WinDbg and/or WhoCrashed, but I found I don't have any dump files!  And the minidump file has only 2 .dmp files, both of which are about 2 weeks old.BTW, one of those programs allowed me to do a 'test crash', which I did...and that might be reflected in some of the error codes you see below in the MiniToolKit report.

But I FINALLY got a BSOD to stick, and I wrote down what it said:

STOP:  0x000000F4 (0x0000000000000003, 0xFFFFFA800COFB330, 0xFFFFFA800COFB610, 0xFFFFFF800037E20D0 )

Then, at the bottom, it said this, which explains the lack of dump files:

Physical Memory Dump FAIL  Status 0XC0000010

I did a second chkdsk, it was a lot shorter, but it still BSODs.

That brings me here.  Is there something I can try/do to get to the bottom of this before I reformat?  And how can I tell if it's a 'physical' drive problem....one so bad that I should actulally buy a new drive vs. re use the one I have?

OH, one other thing that I don't think could be an issue, but I'll mention it; one of my USB jacks is missing the hard-plastic 'thing' inside; there's just the 4 bare wires that must have been shielded within that plastic piece..  I noticed this about 2 months ago when I plugged something into it and the computer just died instantly.  The wires are dead-straight, though...not at all bent or touching.

OH, v2.0:  I read one thread here where one of you experts had someone run MiniTookKit.  So I did that, and checked 4 boxes; Last 10 Event View Errors, Last Installed Programs, List Users, Partitions and Memory size, and List Minidump files

Here are the results:

Hi

Bugcheck F4 is typically caused by a failing hard drive. Systems failure to boot after BSOD and inability to write crash dumps are further indication of a possibly failing HDD. I would first try the below steps.

:step1: Remove and reconnect the hard drive. This will solve any potential  contact issues.

:step2: Run Seatool For DOS.

Since your hard drive is a Seagate one, download and burn the Seatool for DOS disc image from the below link.

http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

Boot from the CD and run a long test with it.

seatools-2.png

Report whether it detects any errors during the test.

I did the remove/blow out/reinstall thing, and then I tried the SeaTools for BIOS. Small problem; the program said it couldn't find any hard drive!  I read up on that issue & tried a few different BIOS settings, but couldn't get it to be recognized.  Does anyone know the BIOS options I have...or tell me what setting might make a difference?

So then I tried the Windows version of SeaTools, and it ran a minute & then BSOD'd...just like it did w/the System Mechanic drive repair utility.  Now I'm stuck, I can't diagnose the problem, so I can't know if it's repairable or not.  For some reason, it does seem a little less unstable, in that it doesn't crash on me when I close the lid, or when it sleeps for an hour or so (it did that all the time before).

Any clues on where I should go from here?  If I get a new drive, do I have to /want to reformat it from scratch (my restore discs), or since it's operating, can my local TigerDirect/Best Buy 'copy' my current drive onto the new one in one simple step?  Or can I do that simply myself...after all, there's room for a 2nd HD in my computer already.  Can I copy from one to the other...or is that even wise?

Thanks again!!

Hi

It is possible to clone your current hard drive to s new one but i don't recommend replacing the drive without confirming whether it is faulty or not. Please try the below steps.

:step1: Enter BIOS setup and navigate to Advanced menu. Select SATA configuration and change SATA mode to IDE from AHCI. Now retry the Seatool DOS version.

:step2: If that didn't helps, obtain SMART data of your HDD by following the below instructions.

1. Download Crystal disk info from the below link.

   http://release.crystaldew.info/redirect.php?product=CrystalDiskInfoSetupEn

2. Install and open the tool. Select Edit --> Copy to copy SMART report to the clipboard. Now paste that in your next reply. Please use Insert code snippet option to preserve formatting.

Your advice got the test to work....I think.

I did the long test, it was running fine...had 8 errors at about 33% complete...then when I look, a green box had popped up saying the test was complete and to access logs I have to do all this stuff.  BUT, it didn't show any results, it didn't ask if I wanted it to repair the problems, and the screen at this point was actually frozen.  It said "to reboot, press control/alt/delete", but that didn't actually do anything; ;I had do to a hard restart.

So a) I didn't understand how to access the log.  I know the serial # of my drive, but when I open Command Prompt in 'Accessories', and type in VIEW[serial number of my drive].LOG" it's not recognized as a valid command.  And it also said to type "DIR * .LOG...what the hell is that asterisk & space for??  that clearly wasn't recognized as a valid command, either.

B) I don't know if the test actually completed.  I don't think it did...I can't see it completing 66% in the 30 seconds I wasn't looking at the screen...and then it froze at the end, despite it saying the test was complete.

Any ideas?  If you can give me clear instructions on how to access the log, I'll post a copy.

Hi

My dear friend, this is bad news.

SMART data shows there are bad sectors in your hard drive.

C5 100 100 __0 000000000008 Current Pending Sector Count
C6 100 100 __0 000000000008 Uncorrectable Sector Count

Seatool also reported the same.

I did the long test, it was running fine...had 8 errors at about 33% complete

Please backup all the data to an external medium immediately and replace the drive as soon as possible.

On the bright side, if you pull the hard disk apart when your done with it, the platter inside makes a lovely drink coaster for your desk.

Thanks for your help, bad news as it is.

OK, I have purchased a new, 1TB Seagate "Hybrid Drive"  , and 8mb more memory to boot (no pun intended).  All my docs/photos/etc are backed up, as is the HD itself, to my external Seagate drive...and I have the original backup discs as well.

SO...what are my first steps when installing the new drive?  Do I need to format and/or partition it?  How should I do that??

Thanks for your help

Follow the system manufacturer's instructions...for restoring to factory defaults/uising restore disks.

No need to partition beforehand...the formatting/partitioning is part of the canned recovery process.
