I recently ran Avast Free edition Anti-virus software. When it finished it had found 7 threats. I had previously selected Delete as the action to be taken when threats (viruses) were found so that they would be deleted automatically. The program showed that it had deleted a file but not another. When I tried to delete it, I got an error message saying that it was being used by another program and so couldn't be deleted at that time.
Two of the files that were found were listed as high threats. I'm sorry but I can't remember the name of the file that was deleted but both files had similar names. Here's what they were called:
There were 5 other files found too, but I didn't take any notice of the names of those files either. I didn't think I'd need to as I've never had this problem before.
Anyway, it asked me to do a bootup scan on my next restart. So I agreed and it restarted my computer and began to do the bootup scan. Unfortunately, I didn't leave it alone to finish. The message on the top of the screen said Press Esc to bypass scan. I was getting impatient and decided to press Esc and do the bootup scan at a later time.
This is where things went wrong. After I pressed the Esc button, the bootscan stopped and my computer began to boot up as per usual - or so I thought.
Normally my computer runs Windows Professional XP SP3 but now when it starts up its running Windows Home Edition. How did that happen? I'm not sure if the service pack 3 is still there as I'm getting an error message when I try to look at my system information. The error message says it cannot collect system information as the files may be moved or missing.
Also, I had a load of programs installed on my computer but now I can only see a few of them. And when I looked in the My Documents folder, all of my Word documents are not there. And some of the folders from My Documents are missing too.
I tried unhiding the folders by going to my computer and going to options, Folder options and de-selecting the Hide protected operating System Files option and also de-selecting the Hide file extensions etc option. But it didn't work in terms of letting me see my Word documents.
I don't have a backup of my Word documents, I know I should but I don't.
I had to re-install itunes when previously I had itunes already on my computer with loads of playlists and music etc. I don't understand what's going on.
Can you please help me restore my computer to how it used to be.
I tried to do a system restore but the only things I could see were Checkpoints not restore points so when I tried using one of the checkpoints, it didn't work.
What can I do? Please help me.
