Hi

I recently ran Avast Free edition Anti-virus software.  When it finished it had found 7 threats.  I had previously selected Delete as the action to be taken when threats (viruses) were found so that they would be deleted automatically.  The program showed that it had deleted a file but not another.  When I tried to delete it, I got an error message saying that it was being used by another program and so couldn't be deleted at that time.

Two of the files that were found were listed as high threats.  I'm sorry but I can't remember the name of the file that was deleted but both files had similar names.  Here's what they were called:

Win32:Malware-gen   Win32:Rustock-AY.

There were 5 other files found too, but I didn't take any notice of the names of those files either.  I didn't think I'd need to as I've never had this problem before.

Anyway, it asked me to do a bootup scan on my next restart.  So I agreed and it restarted my computer and began to do the bootup scan.  Unfortunately, I didn't leave it alone to finish.  The message on the top of the screen said Press Esc to bypass scan.  I was getting impatient and decided to press Esc and do the bootup scan at a later time.

This is where things went wrong.  After I pressed the Esc button, the bootscan stopped and my computer began to boot up as per usual - or so I thought.

Normally my computer runs Windows Professional XP SP3 but now when it starts up its running Windows Home Edition.  How did that happen?  I'm not sure if the service pack 3 is still there as I'm getting an error message when I try to look at my system information.  The error message says it cannot collect system information as the files may be moved or missing.

Also, I had a load of programs installed on my computer but now I can only see a few of them.  And when I looked in the My Documents folder, all of my Word documents are not there.  And some of the folders from My Documents are missing too.

I tried unhiding the folders by going to my computer and going to options, Folder options and de-selecting the Hide protected operating System Files option and also de-selecting the Hide file extensions etc option.  But it didn't work in terms of letting me see my Word documents.

I don't have a backup of my Word documents, I know I should but I don't.

I had to re-install itunes when previously I had itunes already on my computer with loads of playlists and music etc.  I don't understand what's going on.

Can you please help me restore my computer to how it used to be.

I tried to do a system restore but the only things I could see were Checkpoints not restore points so when I tried using one of the checkpoints, it didn't work.

What can I do?  Please help me.

Thanks,

Sharon

Hello Sharon, we need to look at the system set-up ........

You can post each reply one at a time if that is easier -

Download Security Check by Screen317
* Save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: If any security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Please post a snapshot with Speccy for more system details -
How to Publish a snapshot with Speccy <<-- Full Directions Here (only post the link)

Download MiniToolBox, Save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
* Flush DNS
* Report IE Proxy Settings
* Reset IE Proxy Settings
* Report FF Proxy Settings
* Reset FF Proxy Settings
* List content of Hosts
* List IP configuration
* List Winsock Entries
* List last 10 Event Viewer log
* List Installed Programs
* List Devices (Only Problems)
* List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
* List Minidump Files
* List Restore points
NOTE: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Thank You -

Hi

Sorry I took so long to get back to you.  I didn't realise until a short while ago that my topic had been moved to a different forum.  I'd been checking the other forum all day.  I thought it was odd that nobody had even looked at my problem.  Well, now I know why.  Lol.  Hopefully you'll be able to help me anyway.

So, I'm going to do as you suggested and post these items one at a time.

Hi noknojon,

One more little update.  After searching my hard drive I finally found my Word documents.  What a relief.  They were located at

C:\Documents & Settings\SharonC\My Documents.

When I select My Documents from the Start-Up menu, there are only 2 or 3 folders in that My Documents folder.  It's as if I'm looking at a completely different My Documents.  That shortcut doesn't point to my original My Documents folder.  It's very strange.

Apart from that, based on the results I've posted, it looks as if there is something very wrong with my computer.  I really hope you'll be able to help me sort it all out.

Thanks,

Sharon.

You list 3 installed full Antivirus programs plus Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search & Destroy
AVG 8.5
avast! Free Antivirus

McAfee Security Scan Plus

Please uninstall all but one of these programs or nothing will run ......

If you need help, please ask -

Once completed please continue .............

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware version 1.62.0. < This is last years version (Please Update it)

Now run a Quick Scan with the Updated version and post the result back here.

Win32/Rustock is a multi-component family of rootkit-enabled backdoor trojans, which were historically developed to aid in the distribution of 'spam' e-mail. First discovered sometime in early 2006, Rustock has evolved to become a prevalent and pervasive threat. Recent variants appear to be associated with the incidence of rogue security programs.

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

* Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
* A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
* If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
Do not reboot your computer after running RKill as the malware programs will start again.
* If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.
When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NEXT -
Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!

• Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
• If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
• To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
• Click the Start Scan button.
Do not use the computer during the scan
• If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
• If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
• Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
• A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
• Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

Thanks -

I noticed that you gave instructions for Windows 7 / vista - so just to let you know, I'm running Windows XP.

I don't know where you are located in the world, but I'm in Ireland and it's now 02:25am.  So I'm going to go to bed and I'll be in touch again tomorrow and ready and willing to carry out your instructions.

Thanks for all your help so far.

Until tomorrow,

Sharon.

Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator. < Lines like this can be ignored for XP. The directions for all tools are basically the same, and include lines to cover XP / Vista / and Win 7 & 8.

2 things to do -

First try to find your XP Pro CD (or any XP Pro CD),

Next Repost this (as directed) as there are too many files missing and they may be on your computer, but a CD would be better -

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step #6.  If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<==

Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

NOTE : Please Copy / Paste all logs requested, and do not use Attach unless specifically asked -

Good luck and be very patient, as the area can get very busy.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

Thank You -

Hi

I haven't been able to find my CD, not sure that I have one, but I may be able to get my hands on a Windows XP Professional CD soon.

When I get it, do you want me to install it on my computer BEFORE I do anything else?  Also, do I perform an upgrade or a full installation?

Thanks -

Hi

Sorry to labour this point but your instructions in post #11 (which I've read several times now) are still not clear to me.

You say I'm to FIND a Windows XP Professional CD but you said nothing about installing it on my computer.

So does that mean that I'm to follow the rest of the instructions in the Preparation Guide FIRST starting at Step 6 and THEN install the CD?

Or am I to INSTALL the Windows XP Professional FIRST and then continue by following the instructions in the Preparation Guide starting at step 6?

The actions to take may seem obvious to you, but to me, you may as well be speaking in Chinese for all I understand.  I only know a little bit about computers so I need to be crystal clear on what it is I'm supposed to do as I don't really understand what I'm doing.  I'm just doing exactly what you tell me in the order you tell me to do it in.  So please help me here.  I'm feeling a bit lost.

So let's assume I've FOUND the Windows XP Professional but haven't installed it.  What do I do next?

Thanks.

Please follow the directions to post to the EXPERTS Forum area and include the logs I linked.

We are not able to help further in this area, but the Experts will ask for a CD to repair files.

Please note this fact in your first post to the Experts forum area -

If they know that you have a XP Pro CD it will make their job more simple -

Thank You -
