Hello, and thanks in advance for your help,

I am posting because I believe that my computer has somehow become infected by malware that is in some way interfering with Windows Defender, as when I try and open Windows Defender now I receive the error 0x80073b01:

Microsoft Security Client

An error has occured in the program during initialization. If this problem continues, please contact your system administrator.

Error code: 0x80073b01

A quick google search of the error revealed that it may be fairly serious and not very easy to remove. I came across this topic here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/497984/mse-error-0x80073b01/  which convinces me I may need some help to fix this.

Thanks for helping,

I have followed your directions so far, and will post the log files below.

Things to note:

- No change to error message received when attempting to open Windows Defender

- I somehow ended up with two log files from RogueKiller, both of which I will include.

- I was slightly confused by the direction to "Search and delete the AdWare, PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) installed on your computer." I tried searching for any files by those names with no results. After downloading Adwcleaner and running it there was no "delete tab" as suggested, so I just clicked "scan" and then "clean". Please let me know if I made a mistake in this process. I ended up with two log files, both of which I will include.

Again, thank you for your continued help.

I tried searching for any files by those names with no results. After downloading Adwcleaner and running it there was no "delete tab" as suggested, so I just clicked "scan" and then "clean". Please let me know if I made a mistake in this process. I ended up with two log files, both of which I will include.

Thank you for this information. I have Changed my canned speech.
===

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Please let me know of any remaining issues with this computer.

I downloaded and installed Security Check, but when I ran it it gave me this error message:

 UNSUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEM! ABORTED!

Are you aware of any alternatives for Windows 8?

Did you remove a virus protection program from a 3rd party software previously installed on this computer?

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.
===

Secure your system by updating 3rd party programs.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Latest version is Java JRE 7u40 was released on Sept 10. 2013.

Be careful not to install malware posing as Java update!
Important read this blog.
http://blog.trendmicro.com/trendlabs-security-intelligence/malware-poses-as-an-update-for-java-0-day-fix/

Quoted from the page.
"In light of the recent events surrounding Java, users must seriously consider their use of Java. Do they really need it? If yes, make sure that users follow the steps we recommended and get the security update directly from the official oracle website." at:

How to disable Java in your browsers

You can manually check your present version and update as recommended.
https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

Java 7 Update 17

While you are in the Add/Remove programs remove this old version of Adobe Flash Player 10

Note
Java security update installs Ask Toolbar by default -- a single click in a multi-step installer.

I suggest that your un-check the box "Install the Ask Toolbar" before proceeding.

When attempting to update Java, after downloading the .exe and it downloading the update, the installed was interupted by this error message:

Windows Installer

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.

This can occur if the Windows Installer is not

correctly installed. Contact your support personnel

for assistance.

So I have not been able to complete that part of your instruction. Any thoughts on what this may be and how it might be fixed? In the meantime, should I uninstall Java completely to eliminate the security risk?

I have uninstalled Adobe Flash Player 10

Here is the log file from Farbar Service Scanner:

I went ahead to remove the old version of Java and received this error message:

Java 7 Update 17

Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This cvan occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

Seems related to the error I was receiving when trying to update Java, thoughts?

And in response to this question:

Did you remove a virus protection program from a 3rd party software previously installed on this computer?

No, I had not yet installed any 3rd party anti-virus software, as far as I can remember.

Hi, sorry for not replying for a while, I've been away on a trip and haven't had much time to look into this properly until now.

Windows Defender error message remains unchanged.

I have downloaded and run those .reg files and here is the new FSS log:

If you have not resolved the problem yet, please note that a possible fix has been posted (by user bhringer) here.

You may wish to try using HitmanPro 3.7 (v3.7.5.198-Beta) with Kickstart 2.2. (now it's version 3.7.8.207)
A HitmanPro.Kickstart User Manual & FAQ (PDF File) is available here.

If at any time you need advice before proceeding please ask.
