Hi guys, I've followed all the intructions outlined in the 'Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log'

The first signs of something wrong was through google. Everytime I clicked on a link, it would redirect me to a random site.

I've tried using Ad-ware etc and nothing worked.

I've followed the guide:

RESTART
RUN - Ad-ware - found 2 new critical objects - I've saved thea copy of the scan results

RESTART
RUN - BitDefender

RESTART
DOWNLOAD - Zone Alarm Firewall

RESTART
RUN - HijackThis

After every restart, prior to installing the new firewall, Windows Firewall would always turn off. I'd turn it back on, but it would turn off after restarting.

Hello,

You really don't have to worry about your Windows Firewall here. This is normal it is getting disabled, because you have Zonealarm installed. Zonealarm disables it. Because it's a bad idea to have two firewalls active and it can cause problems.

You are using Download Accelerator - DAP Be informed that it delivers popup/popunder ads, and tracks your internet usage. You can find safer alternatives here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php?cat=dlman#dlman
I suggest you remove it. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove it.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Go to next site:
http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mssw5032.dll

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Once scanned, copy, paste and save the results in notepad, because I need the results afterwards.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log and the results of virustotal.

Thanks for the reply miekiemoes. I'm already stuck on the first point. I can't uninstall DAP. I go through Control Panel > Add/Remove > DAP and I get a screen popup saying,

Posted Image

I click on No Thanks, continue Uninstall and nothing happens.

Hello,

Click the No Thanks button, (it says continue with the uninstall under it)
If that didn't work, no worries, skip that step, so we'll deal with the removal of DAP manually afterwards.

Hello,

I've done everything instructed, although I couldn't find : O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmnhx.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmnhx.exe

That's ok, it's because this entry changes everytime after reboot, but fixwareout already took care of it here.

Check and fix next entry in hijackthis:

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Clean Traces - C:\Program Files\DAP\Privacy Package\dapcleanerie.htm

Delete next file and folder:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mssw5032.dll
C:\Program Files\DAP <== folder

I notice from your log that you are running more than one different Anti-Virus programs with Auto-protect enabled.
Rather than giving you extra protection, this can actually give problems because of incompatibility issues, can even cause BSODs and decrease the reliability of it seriously!

I would strongly advise you to only have one Anti-Virus with the Auto-Protect feature running at any one time!

If you decide to only keep one Anti-Virus installed,
you should uninstall the other(s) through the Add or Remove Programs option in Control Panel.

Let me know in your next reply how things are running now.

Hey, I deleted mssw5032.dll, and the DAP folder. Which program do you recommend deleting?

I guess you are talking about the Antivirus programs here? Well, the choice is yours, because they are both good - so you have to decide which one you want to keep. If you purchased norton, it's better to keep norton and once it expires you can decide to reinstall AVG again, because that one is free.
But if you think AVG is easier to use, and you prefer AVG instead of Norton, uninstall Norton.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Thanks for that miekiemoes. I did have Norton but I had to uninstall it because it was mucking up. Have I uninstalled it properly? Everything seems to be working so far, although I'll give it a day or two before I say it's all clean, because, it's happened before, where the system works properly, but then the browser hijack comes back. Will definitely have a read through all those sites. Thanks again, I'll report back in a day or two.

miekiemoes, have I uninstalled Norton properly? I'm thinking of getting McAfee, do you recommend it over what I already have? The main reason for the switch, is because it's an all in one package. Instead of having a seperate program for firewall etc, I just have one. What are your thoughts?

Hello,

I don't know if you uninstalled Norton properly, for that I need a new hijackthislog. Did you have any problems during the Norton uninstall?
Yes, McAfee is a good idea, but Mcafee is no freeware. Also keep in mind you have to uninstall your AVG and Zonealarm as well, because the McAfee package already contains a firewall and Antivirus, and as I already said, never install more than one antivirusscanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!
Another great Antivirus/firewall package is Kaspersky Personal Security Suite: http://www.kaspersky.com/personal-security
This is no freeware either, but you can try the trial first.

Thanks for that miekiemoes, I'll definitely have a look at Kaspersky. Also, I have so many folder and files in the Program Files folder, is there a program to go through it and delete what's no longer in use? Everything seems to be going good now, has anything returned, that shouldn't have? Also, is Norton removed properly? Thanks again miekiemoes, if it wasn't for you, I would've reformat the whole system. Thanks!

Also, one more thing. IE seems to delete alot of the cookies for websites such as forums, and I have to login everytime. It didn't do this before.

Hello,

Also, one more thing. IE seems to delete alot of the cookies for websites such as forums, and I have to login everytime. It didn't do this before.

Well, that's because you probably cleaned cookies before or a tool did this. Normally once you logged in again, it won't ask you again. Unless you configured this in your Zonealarm - it has a feature there to deal with cookies and block them, so better check that out.
No, your Norton/symantec is still present, so let's take a look at your add/remove list and perform next:

Run HijackThis.
On the first menu, click Open the Misc Tools Section
Click Open Uninstall Manager
Click Save List - Save it anywhere.
A notepad will pop-up after it's saved, please copy everything in that Notepad and paste it here.
