Recently I have been having trouble with my android phone. A few days ago it started getting redirected to sites like 'adult app' and '18 and abused'; both sites I have NEVER visited. Anyway as I had recently downloaded an app that I was a little unsure about the safety of I simply reset my phone to factory settings. Things were ok for 3 days until today whilst I was on The Mirror and it suddenly redirected my phone to 'adult app'. My question is; Is this an ad that just happens to feature on some sites? Do I have a virus (this time I haven't downloaded any apps aside from avg antivirus, could I get one from a website?)?

  Any advice is welcome  :)

First off, what site do you think MIGHT have redirected you to this "adult app"?

Second, what is your phone make and model?

Third, is it rooted and who/how was it done?

Fourth, what was the APK/Application you installed and where did you get it?

Smart phones aren't phones. They are Linux/Windows computers that can also make phone calls. Installing applications, games, or other 3rd party APKs is no different for them than it is for your computer. If it's not from a valid and trusted site your risking not only your equipment but EVERYTHING you have on your phone including contacts, banking info, and anything else you use it for.

Factory reset won't wipe the OS. From what you discribe I suspect you are rooted and installed something you got from a website or non-market site. And it's written to your OS partition so when you reset it just writes itself back. If you have CWM setup and made a backup doing a full SET of wipes and then a restore should do it...but who knows...If it's a Samsung you might need to use ODIN and restore things to original.

I've been mucking around with Android for a few years and none of my families 5 phones have ever had an issue like that. But then, I don't know what sites your visiting that might case the XXX redirect. (Warez, adult, pirate, etc.) Do you visit the same sites on your PC?

Regards,

Zen

The first site that redirected me to it was Failbook.failblog.org, then the newspaper site The Mirror. Neither are 'dodgy' and certainly aren't porn. My phone is a sony xperia s. It isn't rooted (didn't even know what that meant until I googled it the other day). And the previous application I installed was Beats advanced rhythm game and some song files uploaded to their forum, I downloaded the actual app from Google Play and it is still up there now.

I haven't had the same issues on computers and hadn't visited anywhere dodgy.

Thanks

A) A few days ago it started getting redirected to sites like 'adult app' and '18 and abused'; both sites I have NEVER visited.

B) The first site that redirected me to it was Failbook.failblog.org, then the newspaper site The Mirror. Neither are 'dodgy' and certainly aren't porn.

I'm confused as the above is a contradiction? I don't think "The Mirror" would redirect you to an adult site for extra revenue no matter how badly paper sales have gotten. :hysterical:

Anyway as I had recently downloaded an app that I was a little unsure about the safety of...

If it was originally installed from Google Market then you should have little to worry about but be aware somethimes things sneak through. It's happened before but it's not often.

What IS permitted is for applications to contain triggers like AD popups, nag screens, and opening sites. You should review and read all the rights and requirements you agree to before installing any app.

I would suggest you look for an "Ad Blocker" and install it to help minimise this sort of thing. You can use this link to start reviewing but I don't recommend any paticular one.

Link: "https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.symantec.android.spot&hl=en"

You can also look for an anti-virus app as well, some come bundled, but stick to the vendor names you know like Nortons, Avast, Kaspersky as an example.

I haven't had the same issues on computers and hadn't visited anywhere dodgy.

I didn't say you had, I noted that using your smart phone was no different than using your computer.

The only thing that doesn't make sense is the "Adult App" and "18 and abused" redirects you note. I wouldn't think that would be allowed for any legitimate app on the market. Clean out any browser links or bookmarks you have that aren't added by you and keep an eye on things. Are you still being redirected to the sites you noted earlier?
