I want to copy my C drive so that if I have problems with the SSD then I can install the copy and boot into Win 7 with all programs etc intact.
Can this be done by a backup of C drive or do I need to Clone the C drive ?

You would need an image or clone of the drive. This can be done with products such as Acronis True Image (not free) or Macrium Reflect (free).
