So I got a brand new emachines last christmas. I've used it for everything. but for some reason it started taking forever to start-up. I have no idea what's wrong with it. when it starts it beeps once and brings up the start mode screen with safe mode and all that jazz. but its got purple or green squares all across the screen. I really need some kind of way to diagnose what the problem is. someone please help me.

Covered by warranty...could be any number of things but...the visual problem connotes of something awry with the hardware (RAM or motherboard or video chip/card).

If it were my system, I'd use the warranty provisions, since the problem is not clear-cut and any tampering with components may void warranty.

That would be my perspective.

<<So I got a brand new emachines last christmas>>

If it was "brand new", it's covered by warranty for a period of 1 year re defective parts, etc.  If in doubt, contact the system manufacturer.

I agree with hamluis, sounds like a hardware issue and most computers have at least a one year manufacture warranty on them. Especially eMachines. Most retailers, espicially ones from best buy, will have a one year hardware warranty that can be serviced.
