Hi there!

I was an idiot and fell for a phone call from a scammer who took control of my computer for about 30 seconds, around the 24th of August.  I installed McAfee on my computer and then due to AT&T Parental Controls pop-ups that were locking up my computer and I couldn't go to any other website but would take me back to att.com, I called them, I uninstalled McAfee, they got disconnected with me, and they were supposed to help me resinstall but I haven't found my paperwork yet nor have I had the time to call them (breathe).  Okay...

So, CONDUIT, TIDY NETWORK, MYPCBACKUP, LINKSWIFT 3.0.0, BROWSERPLUS2 TOOLBAR, and one of the MEDIA BROWSERS like VLC that asked me to download when I went to CouchTuner and I'm not sure if they are legitimate.  I uninstalled the "media browser" so I don't remember the name of that one (I still have VLC because I feel comfortable with that one).

Also, I feel that there is something wrong with having the AT&T Parental Controls and it won't let me delete unless I log in and then when I try to log in it won't let me and locks up my computer and AT&T CS can't seem to help.  I'm desperate!

One other question would be regarding my WD 1T Portable Harddrive that I have backed up everything from my computer on because I was afraid it would crash.  Have I just infected my Portable as well??  :*(

Thank you so much for whatever you can do to help me.  I'm uninstalling these other ones that have been in my Programs but I'm sure there will be something things left.  Thank you, thank you!

Looking better.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Hi, let me know if I need to rerun this without my security on it...looks like that might be wrong.  Sorry!  The only thing that is still wrong with my computer right now is that at time when I'm trying to get on the internet, my browser takes me directly to a certain website called att.net, which is my internet service provider.  The Parental Controls (AT&T) are what I think is the problem.  I can't log in to deactivate them and it requires a login to remove the program off of my computer!!  :)  Thanks for your help!

The Parental Controls (AT&T) are what I think is the problem. I can't log in to deactivate them and it requires a login to remove the program off of my computer!!

Normally you can remove the Parental control using the Add/Remove Programs
It's listed in your attach.txt log as AT&T Parental Controls

If still getting redirected to att.net

Execute this.

Click the StartBtn.gif button. In the Search box, type Command Prompt, and then, in the list of results, double-click Command Prompt.

at the cursor type:
ipconfig /flushdns <-- (A space between g and / is needed)

repeat with
ipconfig /renew

Then hit Enter, type Exit, hit the Enter key.

You may need to run CMD - Command Prompt on Vista - Windows 7/8 with Elevated Privilege
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/02/17/how-to-open-elevated-command-prompt-with-administrator-privileges-in-windows-vista/

Keep me posted.

Hi. I hit start and in the search there I typed Command Prompt like you said and did the steps you suggested.  As well as the "renew".  I'm not sure what that was supposed to do but if I go to start, AT&T Parental Controls and try to uninstall that as well, it says I have to be logged in.  I log in and it still doesn't work...says the same thing.

And...I'm not sure what you mean by this:

I don't think I have Vista or Windows 8.  I'm sorry.  I'm not that computer literate.  :*(  Which one should I download?

Windows 8 Professional: XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB

So, when I go to try and uninstall AT&T Parental Controls through the start menu as well, it's telling me I need to be logged in.  It never takes me anywhere, but I found instructions on how to uninstall.  It's telling me what I've already done but I'm lacking one option that they're saying I should be getting and that is to tell them WHY I'm uninstalling.  Well, when I click to uninstall it says I'm not logged in.  Vicious circle.

When I go to the "Manage Parental Controls" page (I'm logged in because it shows that I am and I have screen shots but I'm not sure how to attach them here.  I may just message you separately.  I can't paste them here OR attach them for some reason.), it says there's a new version and that I need to download it, but NOWHERE does it give me instructions or a link to do so!  This is a typical problem with AT&T since they started the parental controls for minors with email accounts a couple of months ago.  I guess I'm just going to have to be on the phone with them for 2 hours again tomorrow.  Sucks.

Thank you for anymore help you can give me.  I'll try and google more info or find a forum (there's not on the AT&T community...I checked) where someone else has had this problem.  Other than that, how does my computer look?  I'm thinking of uninstalling McAfee again since it all started with www.att.com/attandmcafee when I installed it last month.

Secure your system by updating 3rd party programs.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Latest version is Java JRE 7u40 was released on Sept 10. 2013.

Be careful not to install malware posing as Java update!
Important read this blog.
http://blog.trendmicro.com/trendlabs-security-intelligence/malware-poses-as-an-update-for-java-0-day-fix/

Quoted from the page.
"In light of the recent events surrounding Java, users must seriously consider their use of Java. Do they really need it? If yes, make sure that users follow the steps we recommended and get the security update directly from the official oracle website." at:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

How to disable Java in your browsers
http://www.infoworld.com/t/web-browsers/how-disable-java-in-your-browsers-210882

You can manually check your present version and update as recommended.

https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

Java 7 Update 25

Note
Java security update installs Ask Toolbar by default -- a single click in a multi-step installer.
http://www.benedelman.org/images/iac-jan13/ask-iac-011613-small.png
I suggest that your un-check the box "Install the Ask Toolbar" before proceeding.

Run this on-line scan to check further for malware.

Please scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer.
      Save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png to download the ESET Smart Installer. icon on your Desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

Hi, I've been a little over 6 hours waiting for this scan to finish and it only got to 46%.  It did find 4 threats.  I will try and rerun it tomorrow after church.  I've been working on this on and off all day.  Thank you for your continued help.  About cutepdf...I didn't realize this was a threat.  it's how I print to save to a .pdf file and I've used it on vacation when paying bills, etc., and want to print files when I am able to get to a printer.  What are your thoughts?

C:\Users\HP_Admin\Downloads\CuteWriter.exe    a variant of Win32/Bundled.Toolbar.Ask application
C:\Users\HP_Admin\Downloads\GFFDownloader.exe    probably a variant of Win32/YourFileDownloader.A application
C:\Users\HP_Admin\Downloads\nothing_but_the_truth_chapters_14-19.pdf_downloader_1.exe    probably a variant of Win32/YourFileDownloader.A application
C:\Users\HP_Admin\Downloads\uplayermediaplayer-setup.exe    Win32/DownloadAdmin.G application

C:\Users\HP_Admin\Downloads\CuteWriter.exe a variant of Win32/Bundled.Toolbar.Ask application

You can keep it. Ask toolbar is considered an unwanted program as it often generate popups. That may or may not be you case.

The same is said of the other applications.

If you get popups, run the AdwCleaner and the Junk Removal tools to clean them.

  • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold text into the Run box and click OK:

Please consider using these ideas to help secure your computer. While there is no way to guarantee safety when you use a computer, these steps will make it much less likely that you will need to endure another infection. While we really like to help people, we would rather help you protect yourself so that you won't need that help in the future.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates or get into the habit of checking Windows Update regularly. They usually have security updates every month. You can set Windows to notify you of Updates so that you can choose, but only do this if you believe you are able to understand which ones are needed. This is a crucial security measure.

Having an effective antivirus is a must for everyone.
In addition to many excellent commercial products there are plenty of good free antivirus programs available. I can recommend:

If you are satisfied with your current protection programs you can ignore the instructions on Antivirus or Firewall listed below. In addition to an antivirus I recommend using a firewall. A software firewall is a software program that helps screen out hackers, viruses, and worms that try to reach your computer over the Internet. I can recommend one of the following free products:Please note: Many installer offer third-party downloads that are installed automatically when you do not uncheck certain checkboxes. While most of the time not being malicious you usually do not want these on your computer. Be careful during the installation process and you will avoid seeing tons of new unwanted toolbars in your favorite web browser.

Please consider installing and running some of the following programs; they are either free or have free versions of commercial programs:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM)
The free version of MBAM can be used to scan the system for traces of malware. Scanning your system regularly will make it harder for malware to reside on your system.
A tutorial on using MBAM can be found here.
Please Note: Only the paid for version has real time capabilities.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent malware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

Please keep these programs up-to-date and run them whenever you suspect a problem to prevent malware problems. A number of programs have resident protection and it is a good idea to run the resident protection of one of each type of program to maintain protection. However, it is important to run only one resident program of each type since they can conflict and become less effective. That means only one antivirus, firewall and scanning anti-spyware program at a time. Passive protectors, like SpywareBlaster can be run with any of them.

Note that there are a lot of rogue programs out there that want to scare you into giving them your money and some malware actually claims to be security programs. If you get a popup for a security program that you did not install yourself, do NOT click on it and ask for help immediately. It is very important to run an antivirus and firewall, but you can't always rely on reviews and ads for information. Ask in a security forum that you trust if you are not sure. If you are unsure and looking for anti-spyware programs, you can find out if it is a rogue here:A similar category of programs is now called "scareware." Scareware programs are active infections that will pop-up on your computer and tell you that you are infected. If you look closely, it will usually have a name that looks like it might be legitimate, but it is NOT one of the programs you installed. It tells you to click and install it right away. If you click on any part of it, including the 'X' to close it, you may actually help it infect your computer further. Keeping protection updated and running resident protection can help prevent these infections. If it happens anyway, get offline as quickly as you can. Pull the internet connection cable or shut down the computer if you have to. Contact someone to help by using another computer if possible. These programs are also sometimes called 'rogues', but they are different than the older version of rogues mentioned above.

Please keep your programs up to date. This applies to Java, Adobe Flashplayer, Adobe Reader and your Internet Browsers in particular. Vulnerabilities in these programs are often exploited in order to install malware on your PC. Visiting a prepared web page suffices to infect your system.

In general Firefox, Opera and Google Chrome are considered to be more secure than Internet Explorer. In addition there are many useful addons that can protect you from possible risks:
  • WOT will warn you when you try to visit sites with poor reputation. The reputation is based on user ratings and is usually very accurate.
  • Script Blocker can help blocking many attempts to infect your system via malicious websites by only allowing scripts at sites you trust.
  • NoScript is a popular Firefox addon,
  • ScriptNo a popular Google Chrome addon.
For much more useful information, please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How did I get infected in the first place

Hopefully these steps will help to keep you error free. If you run into more difficulty, we will certainly do what we can to help.

Okay, 6 hours and 20 minutes later, this is what my scan said:

C:\Users\HP_Admin\Downloads\CuteWriter.exe    a variant of Win32/Bundled.Toolbar.Ask application    cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Users\HP_Admin\Downloads\GFFDownloader.exe    probably a variant of Win32/YourFileDownloader.A application    cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Users\HP_Admin\Downloads\nothing_but_the_truth_chapters_14-19.pdf_downloader_1.exe    probably a variant of Win32/YourFileDownloader.A application    cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Users\HP_Admin\Downloads\uplayermediaplayer-setup.exe    Win32/DownloadAdmin.G application    cleaned by deleting - quarantined

Now, I'll do some housecleaning.  :)  THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Oh, one more thing, one of my plugins is not working.  It's for Shockwave Flash...may have stopped working.  Is this something I can safely put back on my computer?  I don't understand Add-ons or Plug-ins at all.  I just know trying to play Candy Crush (which I mostly play on my phone or ipad) on Facebook is pulling this warning up.

Thanks again!
