My parents have Frontier internet, and we were cooking along (And I mean cooking) on our old router, till the wireless cut out, and we ended up getting a new one. We got a NetGear 7550, and the biggest issue is that on this new router, if I open any game on Steam and play multiplayer, the ping will start a solid 40-80 (normal) and within a few seconds, shoot up to like 700 or something. We have 2.67 mbps down and 0.27 mbps upload, but that never stopped me from play Team Fortress 2 before.

Does anyone have any help or ideas for me? Frontier's online support is useless.

Edited with computer details:

Acer Aspire x3200

Wireless - Distance is about 15- 20 feet maybe even closer

Router: Netgear 7550

Internet type: Dsl
