Hello all,

My computer recently crashed and I've had to turn to outside help to get it mended. My problem is that it has been registered to my name, when I would far prefer a pseudonym! Cookies appear on my computer with my full name on them, and every Word/Excel/ whatever file I open has my proper name as the author.

There's nothing particularly private on my PC, but having my name on everything makes me vastly uncomfortable, as I was hacked a while ago by unsavoury people.

I'm wondering if there is a way to permanently change my name to something else? It seemed all too easy for the hackers to get details about me, and the whole experience unnerved me.

Cheers,

Ally.

Yes there is, but it seems to require, Ally, a registry change, so you must be extremely careful about doing it and BACKUP the original registry before you make a change to it.

See the instructions here:

Thanks - I've done that.

However, all my cookies still seem to read as my full name@website.

There's a small free program that i use called 'Fresh UI'.... this will enable you to change the owner name of your computer without having to make registry changes. It can be downloaded from Fresh UI
You will have to register with your email address to get the actual download link.
It will allow you to make a lot of changes to your computer that would normally be quite difficult.

The cookies were no doubt installed on your hard drive under your old owner name; since cookies are actually files, changing your name will not drive that information down and change the content of the files already there. You would need to delete the old cookies and replace them.

John
