someone please move this if the consensus is that it isn't OS related. it probably belongs under internal hardware but I'm not sure and I'm starting to panic.

okay. vista homepremium SP2 here.

ever since I got this computer(around four years ago), I would rarely have instances where I'd power it on, and it would POST, and move on to the stage of boot where the machine looks to see if there's a bootable CD, and would then trip up and get out the nvidia boot manager to attempt a network boot. this has been disconcerting, but since powering off before or after it realized there was nothing on the network to boot from and then powering on again would result in the machine booting normally, I had little option but to assume that, given the rarity at the times (like... maybe once every six months at most) that it was simply a quirk of this machine, which is an emachines refurb (I didn't select it myself, or I wouldn't have gone emachines. *sigh*).

however.

within the last month, this bootup stalling has begun happening more frequently. and sometimes it doesn't get out the nvidia boot manager even. the "turn it off and back on" thing was still resolving it in a single go... getting worried...

and today it took multiple tries to get the machine booted. now. the "not getting the boot manager" thing may simply be impatience. but having multiple stalls in a row is still seriously "oh crap" material. I got the boot manager twice before the machine actually booted, as always not being able to boot from network and declaring the disk-boot to have failed. (sidenote: I don't have a vista startup disc because I never did figure out how to get at that recovery partition with anything other than the dialog box for turning on and off system restore. I do have a win7 disc and a license for ultimate, but I was hoping to avoid using it on this box so I wouldn't have to mess with MS deactivating it from this machine and reactivating it on a new one if I were to afford one.... X_x)

but once the machine is up and running, it behaves normally. I have not seen any recent performance irregularities, belarc says the system drive's SMART status is fine... no evidence of malware has been seen recently either.

so I'm at a loss, but running scared all the same. my income has nosedived recently and I can't afford to replace this machine. if it dies I'll be forced on to an ancient box (700mhz celeron, 256mb of SDRAM....) that certainly won't get things done besides give me internet communication slowly. I am at best likely to beg friends for financial help to take this thing in to the shop, but that's not something that can be counted on.

while I'm apt to just leave the machine running instead of shutting down overnight if I must, I know vista doesn't much like being kept running for days and eventually starts bugging out and needing a reboot. so I need a better idea what the problem is so that I can have any hope of finding an answer before I wind up in a situation where my autism makes me go batty over lack of my computer.

so. symptoms:

increasing rate of system boot stalling and the machine failing to boot from it's hard drive, even though operations remain normal once boot to windows is successful.

only "irregular" thing in recent times besides the aforementioned symptom was that I dusted out the casing, but had to use an old, dry toothbrush to loosen dust because I ran out of compressed air dusters, and when I was dusting near the CPU socket I bumped into a capacitor and it moved ever so slightly. it went right back to the positioning it belonged in when the toothbrush was hastily withdrawn, and it wasn't exactly wiggling or anything though. mostly just the sort of "movement" you get any time you apply any force to the upper portion of something whose bottom is anchored. a very slight tilt. all prodding of dust was done very lightly, with only slightly greater force being applied to the upper surfaces of the heat sink.

and thus once again I come here hoping someone can help me solve my computer problems. help please. T_T

Try this: In the BIOS under the boot sequence, disable everything except the hard drive.

note: due to the intermittent occurence pattern of this problem, though I'm willing to try spywaredoc's suggestion it could take a while to be able to report anything about if it makes a difference.

I'm about to schedule error checking and reboot. wish me luck.

back to windows at least. I was watching chkdisk and had to run for the *ahem*porcelain horse*ahem* and when I got back the machine was POSTing again. dunno if it finished or had an ulcer or what. >.o don't know offhand where it'd put any logs it might keep...

upon booting this time I got windows update telling me about how the comp rebooted to finish installing updates (but I hadn't done any updates...) and got to see a history of my update installs. dunno if that's from any of the above or from my having run sfc to check for any damage by pso2's buggy update this week. the update history, of course, doesn't show anything I didn't know about or authorize, datewise. panic is... not really going away. >.o

I hate to doublepost and bump, but the edit button's gone away so I have to in order to point out that I'm gonna presume that the update history thing was a result of sfc or whatever having set windows update back to full automatic (I keep it on "notify me" because there's been horribly bugged updates in the past, so I check here(bleepingcomputer) before letting it do things, normally.) so that we can just ignore that for now. >_<;

bump from the abyss time.

so I just got done with a power outage. took three tries to get the comp booted back up. first two times as best I can tell the mobo wasn't seeing the HDD(the line it's info belongs on in the POST was blank). I've done warm reboots along the way since the last posting of this thread without issue.

panic resumes at the utmost. >_<

Replace your CMOS batter...then go into BIOS and select default setttings...see that all connected drives are properly reflected in BIOS...set date/time/year data if needed...set boot options properly (hard drive first option)...save all the changes.

When the system reboots, tell us if problems still remain.
