Hello,

My system contains two hard drives:  a 1GB C: drive for my operating system and programs, and a second, smaller D: drive for saving my valuable data files

The 1GB C: drive is relatively new and has not caused me any problems.

However, the D: data drive is recycled from my old computer build, and seems to sometimes mark whining noises, especially when the computer is first booting up.  Also, lately my computer has started to occasionally restart itself out of the clear blue.

I just ran the MiniToolBox program tonight, and it seems to be reporting disk drive errors. (See below)

What diagnostics can I run to thoroughly check out both my harddrives?

Here is my speccy info:  http://speccy.piriform.com/results/3ZsER6iJvx3tZdCplJQirCm

Here is my MiniToolBox info:

Download...follow the instructions for running the extended test.  Do not run any other alternatives provided on the diagnostic.

WD Data Lifeguard for DOS

Test each drive, one at a time.

Post the results of the extended test for each.

Before running the diagnostic...I suggest that you backup any valued data on each drive.

Here are the results of the Quick Test (will try running extended test next).

C: drive containing Windows 7 = unable to run the test, missing test tracks, error/status code 0229

D: drive containing my data files = completed without errors

The WD Lifeguard DOS extended test was completed successfully on my data D: drive.  Hooray!!!!

However, despite my main C: drive passing the thorough chkdsk process without a problem, every time I try to run the WD Lifeguard DOS test on it, the test refuses to run and gives me that error code 0229 message.

After doing some googling, saw that some others have reportedly been able to fix this problem by replacing their SATA data cable, so I will give that a try this weekend.

Well, have swapped out the SATA data cable for my main C: Drive, but am still getting the "unable to run the test, missing test tracks, error/status code 0229" error message whenever I try to run the Western Digital Lifeguard Diagnostics for DOS on it.  At least the C: Drive seems to be working okay (I think).

Have also downloaded and run the Windows version of Data Lifeguard on my C: Drive, and the quick test completed successfully.  Hooray.

Will now try running the extended test on the C: Drive..

Okay, for the good news:  My C: Hard drive successfully passed the extended version of the WD Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows test.

However, just before I ran the test, my computer rebooted itself again out of the clear blue, and gave the following error message after restarting:  "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown".

Therefore, it seems there is still something slightly wrong with my Windows 7 Home Premium computer (just not the hard drives).

Can someone suggest what other types of computer diagnostics I can try next?

Should this topic be moved to the Windows 7 forum?

Hi

There are event log errors in the Minitoolbox result which points to a SATA driver issue.

Please update the chipset driver from the below link and report whether it makes any changes.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=816&DwnldID=20775&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Chipset+Software+Installation+Utility&lang=eng

Also i recommend to replace the data cable of both drives and reset their power connectors. Report your findings in next reply.

Sorry for the delay in responding.  My wife's computer conked out, and I got diverted for awhile getting her a replacement.

Okay, I downloaded the chipset driver from the link you provided.  The automatic install method did not work for me, but I was able to manually install updated drivers for both the 2-channel and 4-channel SATA controllers, plus also manually installed the driver for the Intel ICH10 Family SMBus controller.

My computer seems to be working better now (although it did restart unexpectedly tonight).  Have not had a chance to reconnect the hard drive power connectors yet, though.

Will try to run MiniToolBox tonight, and will post the results when done.  Hopefully that will give you some useful clues.

P.S.  My computer used to be very stable.  About a month ago I started using a freeware program called SlimDrivers to help update my computer drivers.  The driver updates seemed to work okay, but perhaps that may have contributed to the present instability problem.

Here is my MiniToolBox results:

Hi

According to Minitoolbox result, there is no crash dump files are created in your system. If it is a driver problem or a memory failure, you will see blue screen of death before restarting. In your case system seems to be restarting suddenly without any reasons. This kind of issues are probably caused by a failing power supply in most cases. Unfortunately only reliable way to test an SMPS is to swap it with a known good one.

Do you have a spare power supply unit for testing ?. Did you saw BSOD before system restarts ?.

Using driver update apps or driver boosters, etc. is never recommended. They're as bad as system optimizers or registry cleaners.
