I have a Windows Vista Basic SP2 installed Dell Inspiron 1750.

I noticed that it was stuttering now and again during use and that the memory usage and hard drive usage was high and due to other various issues I tested the hardware (all OK) and ended up reinstalling it from the recovery partition.

Afterwards all seemed OK, but time after time I noticed when booting up sometimes it would BSOD and reboot. So, turned off the autoreboot and now I find the error is:-

STOP c0000269 {illegal system DLL relocation}

Exception processing message c0000269 parameters 7ff7710

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Firewall: Enabled         Display Name: COMODO Firewall
Antivirus: Enabled        Display Name: avast! Antivirus      Product Version: 8.0.1489.0       Virus Signature Database: Up to date

These two can conflict.  I would remove Comodo Internet Security...use the Windows Firewall  and Avast AV together without problems..

Java
Java Runtime Environment   Path: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe              Version: 6.0      Update: 21     Build: 07
Java Runtime Environment   Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\java.exe     Version: 7.0      Update: 25     Build: 17

You have two java versions installed, older versions feature known vulnerabilities...I suggest uninstalling the non-current version.

Insignificant...but worthy of a question:  Your power settings turn off your hard drive...before invoking the suspend function.  If the hard drive is off, what is there to suspend?

I see a couple of instances where you have used Windows Update to install drivers/hardware updates.  IMO...the only place that you should obtain either of such...would be the Dell website.  Using Windows Update for drivers has been known to cause problems in a system.  Windows Update is useful only for installing critical security updates to Windows and/or Microsoft Security Essentials.

I can't decipher anything from your Event Viewer errors, other than the fact that your system is not working properly.

Information on the STOP error cited...is unreliable, IMO, and inconclusive as to what is going on and/or why.

Thank You hamluis,

I have now restored the machine via the recovery partition, and after turning off automatic reboot on BS it has rebooted successfully 15 times.   I know that seems excessive but I needed to make sure.

Anyway, the image already has Vista SP2 on it, so I'm now doing the Windows Updates (no drivers this time) and hopefully all will be well.

Shall update when I have more information.

Thank You.

As this topic is one of top google results for c0000269 error, I will write here what helped me (twice).

I'm using Vista x64 Home Premium, but after some Windows updates I couldn't (re)start system. The error occurred after initializing graphics (mouse pointer appeared) but before screen with a list of user accounts. Safe mode and last known good configuration worked well - but with a next system start (normal, not from hibernation), there was again BSOD c0000269. Tried:

chkdsk c: /f /r

(no problems)

and

sfc /scannow

(some problems found, but after restart needed to fix them - again BSOD).

After more "googling" noticed that Comodo software is mentioned in some topics (not necessarily as a cause - but at least some of users experiencing problem were using Comodo firewall or Comodo Internet Security). I had CIS too (fully updated) and uninstalling it fixed the problem. After that I intalled CIS again and it works fine.

(To answer some suggestions in other topics - I'm pretty sure my system is not infected, installing updates ASAP, running Vista for 5 years without reinstallation and I know how to use WinDBG to find probable cause of problems, but this time didn't need to).

Hope it helps others with same problem.

Mirek
