Hi all,

I hope I am posting this in the proper forum.

I just bought my first laptop (yeah, yeah.. I know).  I want to factory restore the sucker to rid it of anything and everything the previous owner has on it.  I downloaded the owner's manual for this model (Satellite C55-S5123) and it states (paraphrasing)~To Factory reset hold 0 key down and press start button, then release t0 key when the Toshiba boot screen shows up. The laptop will beep and  the Warning screen will show up and then go to the Restore Options screen.

This doesn't happen.  It goes straight to the Windows loading screen after the beeping with the dos _ in the upper left.  I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and it discovered something and cleaned it and I rebooted, but I still can't access the Factory reset options.  They should be there.  I wasn't provided with restore discs and don't want Toshiba to rip me off for $30 for the replacement discs when the partition should be there.

I ran a DXdiag and will paste that following.  Is there anything I can do to access the Factory Restore on this laptop?  Thanks to any and all that can help me.

The following information came from Micro Center Tech Support Online - Toshiba Satellite C655-S5132 Factory Default recovery

Toshiba Satellite C655-S5132 Factory Default recovery
  1. Power off computer
    • (If it will not shut down normally press and hold the power button until it powers off about 20 seconds)
  2. Identify the F8 key at the top of the keyboard
  3. Power on the computer and begin to tap on the F8 key about 1 time a second (or quicker).
    • If you see the computer boot back into windows for a login, you have missed the recovery screen. Please power off the computer and tap F8 a bit more quickly
    • If you cannot get the repair menu screen to come up, you will want to check your keyboard or you may have a hardware problem that needs service at Micro Center.
  4. At the repair menu you will see several options for "Safe Mode""Safe Mode with networking", and "Repair your computer" as well as others.
    • Choose "Repair your computer" by using the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the highlight up and down.
    • When Repair your Computer is highlighted you can press the enter key (return key) to go into that menu.
  5. The next menu will have the following items:
    • Startup repair
    • System Restore
    • System Image recovery
    • Windows memory Diagnostics
    • Command Prompt
    • Toshiba Recovery Wizard  Choose this menu item by using the arrow keys to move the highlight and press enter
  6. The next menu will have the following items:
    • Recovery of factory default software
      • This will erase the partition information and reformat the drive. ALL DATA WILL BE LOST! It restores the computer to the state it was in when it was new without any data. After completion the computer will need to be set up again just like when it was first purchased.
    • Recovery of factory default software with user data
      • This does not partition or format the drive, but replaces all the windows software and original folders. Your programs that were added after you purchased the computer will need to be reinstalled
    • Erase the hard disk
  7. Choose the recovery option above that best suits your needs.
  8. The system will now start the recovery you requested. This will take about 1 hour and the system may reboot several times as it sets itself up.

Hi Arach (don't worry, I won't pass the peanut butter ;)

I followed the instructions and it went into recover (I can also access Repair by hitting F12 at boot screen) and everything shows up EXCEPT Toshiba Recovery Wizard

I went into the command prompt and accessed the directory, and there is a setup.exe file listed above the 3 directories, but I cannot get it to load from the dos command.  I'm not even sure that's the one I want.

Is there any way that I can verify that the Factory Restore files are even there?  Are they in a separate partition?  If so, can I get into it, just to activate it?

Thanks for the help... I truly appreciate it.

We need to know if this is a SSD or a HDD.

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

Click on File, and then click on Publish Snapshot.

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

Go to the start menu and type in diskmgmt.msc in the Search programs and files box.  Click on Disk Management in Programs.

Look to see if the C: drive has two partitions.

It does have 2 Volumes listed under Disc 0:

(C:) and System Reserved

But that's all that's listed besides the CD-ROM and Disc 1

Can you take a screen shot and post it here?

1. Download and run A Thousand Words .

2. Follow the wizard to capture a screenshot

3. Use the built-in editor to resize, edit, or re-capture your screen shot.

4. Your screen shot will be saved to your desktop when you finish the wizard.

You can post the screenshot in your next post as an attachment.

Just below the area where you write text in a post there is the Post button, to the right of this is More Reply Options

Post2_zpsf05c0430.png

When you click on More Relpy Options  you will see Attach Files and Browse, click on Browse, this will open Pictures on your computer, click on the image you made with the Snipping Tool, then click on Attach This File, then Add Reply.

I attached a pic of the diskmgmt screen.

If it isn't possible to do a factory restore without the discs, is there a way to erase or reset the Administrator user profile to rid the pc of all the docs, progs and such the previous owner has on it  then just create a fresh one?  I ran Malwarebytes, Superantispyware and Windows Defender and think it's clean.  So I would be happy if I could just start with a clean Administrator User Profile.

Again, I can't thank you enough for all your help Arach.

The System Reserved Partition holds the Boot Manager code and the Boot Configuration Database.  It reserves space for the startup files required by the Bitlocker Drive Encryption feature.  This is not a recovery partition.  This means that you would need the recovery discs in order to do the system recovery.

You can use this link to inquire about purchasing the discs.  Without the serial number for this computer I can't find any further specifics at this Toshiba Website.

I was thinking I was out of luck when I noticed that Win 7 Professional was installed in 2012, probably overwriting the system restore partition.  I do appreciate the help.

I've uninstalled/deleted everything (I could see) that was put on the PC since it was first sold.  I know it's not a system restore, but hopefully with all the malware / antivirus scans I have run it's close.

Take care
