Hi,

My computer had been having some problems and the modem was getting really hot and shutting down so I purchased a new modem and the computer would not recognize it. The same day, the computer pretty much stopped working - I get the Blue Screen many times if I try to do anything and at one point, my Norton anti-virus stopped working and I had no firewall. I put the old modem back on and got Norton to work again but the other problems remain. I called Norton and they did some checking on my system and said that the computer (less than 2 year old ASUS with Windows 7) is fine and there are no viruses but all of my drivers and registry are out of date and that is why this is happening. In fact, they said that no Windows updates have ever been done. I do not believe that can be correct because the Windows Updates were set to download automatically and I have seen the updates happening. They want $200 plus to fix it but I would like to try on my own before paying this much. I checked Windows Update and it says no updates have been done. Could something have removed the updates? I tried to download the 14 important updates and it won't work - just sits there at 0% download or goes to a BSOD. Is there anything I can do besides paying Norton to fix it for me? I am not sure how I can fix the registry issue, which is supposedly the other problem. Thanks very much. Any help is very appreciated.

Did you go into device manager and delete the old modem before you installed the new one?  If not do so that should get the new one recognized.

No, I didn't. I will try that once these other problems are fixed.  I am afraid to remove this old modem since it the only one working and keeping me connected to the internet. Any thoughts on my other issues?

Hi

Please follow the below instructions to collect some basic info about your system.

:step1: A Speccy snapshot.

Generate a report about your system using Speccy by reading the guide below. Make sure to run the Speccy after running the system about one or more hour. This will give us an indication of current CPU -GPU temperature status.

Post the web link displayed by Speccy in next reply.

:step2:  A Minitoolbox log

Download Minitoolbox from the below link.

Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.

-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size
    -List Minidumps

Now click "Go" and post the output in next reply

Hi

Thanks for providing the logs. Since there are blue screen issues, please upload the crash dump files also.

1. Open C:\Windows\Minidump folder and copy all the files inside that folder to a temporary folder. Disable User Account Control if you encounter a permission error.

2. Zip the dump folder and attach it with the next reply. If the file size is more than 512KB , upload it to a free file hosting site and post the download link.

Hi

As a preliminary troubleshooting step, let us try updating old drivers and removing known problematic softwares.

:step1: Uninstall Optimizer Pro.

This software is nothing a but a pure bloatware. Please uninstall it completely from the system.

:step2: Run System File Checker.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

This will fix any corrupted system files. Report the output message displayed by the program in next reply.

:step3:  Update AMD Graphic and Chipset driver.

1. Download and run AMD driver cleaning tool to remove the current version. Restart the system when finished.

   http://www2.ati.com/drivers/amd_cleanup_util_1.2.1.0.exe

2. Download and install the below version of " AMD chipset " driver.

    http://www2.ati.com/drivers/13-4_vista_win7_win8_32-64_sb.exe

3. Download and install the latest display driver form the below link.

    http://www2.ati.com/drivers/13-4_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe

:step4:  Uninstall Asus bundled softwares.

Please uninstall the below Asus softwares from the system.

AI Manager

ASUS Backup Wizard (Version: 1.00.10)
ASUSUpdate (Version: 7.18.03)
AsusVibe2.0 (Version: 2.0.3.585)

:step5: Update system BIOS.

Download version 0801 of the BIOS from the below link.

http://www.asus.com/Desktops/Essentio_CM1730/#support_Download_30

You can use the EZFlash tool to safely update the BIOS. Detailed instructions are included in the user manual which can be downloaded from the same link. After the updating completes, enter BIOS setup and load Optimized defaults to make sure all voltage and frequency settings are in the default values.

:step6:  Uninstall Norton AV for testing.

If the above steps didn't helps, try uninstalling Norton as a test. Norton is known to be a resource hog and sometimes can cause BSOD issues. Although there is no direct indication that Norton is involved in the crashes, it  might worth a try to run the system without it. You can re-install Norton any time if it is not the culprit.

I did steps 1-4.  Step 2 (scannow) did not fix all the errors after many attempts.  The log is attached.  The installation of the latest display driver had several failures.  I attach that log as well.  I will try the bios update tomorrow.  Thanks so much for your help.

Hi

There is only two ways exists to fix corrupted files in a Windows 7 system which can't be repaid using SFC. First method is a complete re-install which is of course the last choice. Second method is a repair install which will replace all system files but preserves all installed programs, data and most drivers. Before doing a repair install, we should first make sure the hard drive is in good shape and it is not the root cause behind the file corruption. To check the hard drive, please use the Seagate Seatool for DOS.

:step1: Download Seatool for DOS from the below link.

      http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

:step2: Burn the ISO to a blank CD.

      http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/201431en

:step3: Boot from the CD and run a Long Test.

Report whether it detects any errors during the test.
