My Presario C730 has a blank screen -no bios information, no video at any time -although the backlight is working. I have changed the screen (twice!) but no improvement. When I connect an external monitor the video is OK on the monitor. So, could it be that the video cable which crosses the laptop hinge has failed? Is this a known problem? Can you buy them? Any help appreciated!

Known problem- not sure, but Ebay has more than a few listings for them  http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=compaq+presario+c700+lcd+cable .

Your diag seems fine.  External monitor works, backlight works. Cable is the main/cheapest suspect now.
