I am new to the forum, but have been lurking here for years for the excellent advice you give.

A strange situation has developed, we tried to clean an old slow XP laptop. Regular Malwarebytes and Avast scans showed no infections, but we used ADW Cleaner, JRT, and a final HitmanPro to purge and hopefully spead it up. Also running Online Armor.

Now, many sites view the laptop as not recognized and the passwords are not starred out. Reset Avast to factory defaults.

Could something have been wiped off? Thanks

Now, many sites view the laptop as not recognized...

Was there a specific message? If so, exactly what did it say.

Without seeing the logs there is no way of knowing what was detected and removed. You mentioned AdwCleaner and JRT in the topic title but also used HitmanPro which could have caused the issue.

Have you tried using System Restore to return to a previous state before the problems began?

Thanks,  but after several log-in, log-outs with, the computer is recognized and all is working OK - actually must faster. Must have been quite a purge to have caused this.

Hitman was the last package to run after ADW and JRT and Hitman found no threats. I am concerned about your comment regarding HitmanPro. I was initially quite impressed by it and was considering getting a license. I will study it further on this forum before making up my mind.

Again, many thanks for your reply.
