Hi,

I've been experiencing the BSOD on Win 8 any time the laptop goes to sleep. Its a relatively new laptop and this problem began a few days ago. It occurs every time the laptop is shut or goes to sleep.

If anyone could help with resolving this I would be very grateful. I've listed some data below - let me know if you need anything else from me.

:welcome: to the Bleeping Computer forum.

Your issue seems to be probably caused by Intel storage controller driver.

BugCheck 9F, {3, fffffa80077837f0, fffff880009bd7e0, fffffa800816d970}

*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for iaStorA.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for iaStorA.sys
Probably caused by : iaStorA.sys

Your system seems to be using the stock version of Intel storage controller driver which is dated July 2012.

Image name: iaStorA.sys
    Timestamp: Tue Jul 10 02:12:33 2012 (4FFB4239)

Your system seems to be an Ultrabook which uses Intel Smart Response technology and Intel Rapid Start technology to speed up system performance. This setup uses a small sized SSD as a cache between the hard drive and system to speed up data transfer. Updating storage drivers require re-configuring the setup.

Please uninstall Intel Rapid Start Technology from Control Panel --> Programs and report how the system works.

Hi Anshad,

Thanks for offering your help

I uninstalled the Intel Rapid Start Technology but unfortunately the problem persists. I also ran the Intel Driver Update Utility and updated the graphics driver (though that doesn't seem to be the cause of the problems either). Should I also uninstall the Intel Rapid Storage Technology perhaps?

Once again a link to the latest Minidump files after your latest advice if that helps:

Hi

Let us try updating the driver to the latest version. Please follow the below instructions.

:step1: Uninstall Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver completely and restart the system.

:step2: Update the storage driver by installing the latest Chipset driver.

     https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=816&DwnldID=20775&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Chipset+Software+Installation+Utility&lang=eng

Leave the IRST uninstalled for testing. Open the minidump folder and delete all crash dumps to clean it. Now test the system by entering standby or hibernation.

That seems to have worked at present!

Should I be concerned about reinstalling the Intel Rapid Start and Rapid Storage Drivers? Do I miss out significantly by not having them?

Thanks for your help Anshad!

Hi

IRST is not a necessary component. Report how the system works after two days ( to make sure everything works fine ) and we can then decide to install it or note.

Everything still seems to be working fine - thanks for your help. If I were to want to reinstall IRST at a later point would it simply be a case of reinstalling the drivers?

Hi

I am glad that the issue is resolved. It is better to leave the IRST uninstalled. Re-installing it requires re-configuring "Rapid Start Technology" which is a little complicated process. An internet search shows crashes and BSOD are common with "Rapid Start Technology" so i don't recommend re-installing it.

Check for memory problems and diagnose them, if required to do so:

1. Open your Start Screen, type "Windows Memory Diagnostic".
2. Open the tool, choose "Restart now and check for problems".

Check DEP status and disable it, if already enabled:

1. Open your Start Screen, type "Command Prompt".
2. Open it as an administrator only.
3. Type the following command in the window:
bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff
