Hello
This is my first time. This is the problem I'm having. I am getting popups, unwanted icons and popups from my taskbar, and new desktop icons. The problems are as follows in detail: I recieve a Red box popup from the taskbar, on it it says Your compuer is infected! Critical system error! system has detected spyware . Click on this to get updated software: It's abreviated but that's bascially the jist of it. When I click on it it brings me to a spyware removal program, Spyquake. The second popup on my quickstart menu has a blinking triangle with exclimation point in it, and it says System alert: Adaware and Spyware. Your computer performance has slowed because of spyware ect. I click on it and it brings me to Adaware Bazooka page. I also recieve a popup saying Critical System Error: Your system is infected by spyware and other unwanted programs, click okay to get software and special offers on antivirus software. And then I also recieve various popups from Online gambling and matchmaking sites.
As for the new desktop icons They are as follows: Two icons one with Online Security Guide and Security troubleshooting.
Also my internet explorer has changed it's startup page to http://www.safetydefender.com/. I have attempted to change it back but every time I reset the hopemage it puts me back to that site. This has been going on for atleast two days now and I've tried To scan with Norton antivirus, adaware and spybot. Cleaned the system but it didn't help.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Post it on your next reply.

So we need a new Hijackthis log and the contents of C:\rapport.txt.

You didn't post a new Hijackthis log, please post a new one on your next post after running this tool below.

====

Boot into Safe Mode. Please restart your computer and before the Windows logo appear, tap F8 repeatedly. A menu should appear, select Safe Mode from the menu and then hit Enter on your keyboard. (this will take a while, so don't worry, just wait)

====

Run SmitfraudFix

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found here - C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

====

We need to see -

1. new HijackThis log
2. new contents of C:\rapport.txt

Hi,

The tool (SmitfraudFix) is still being updated to remove this -

O2 - BHO: Nothing - {edbf1bc8-39ab-48eb-a0a9-c75078eb7c8e} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp96EB.tmp (file missing)

So we will not fix that entry in HJT yet, so I can remember that we still need to use SmitfraudFix again, when it's already updated.

=====================================

Download ATF Cleaner
  • Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
=====================================

Show Hidden Files and Folders

Click Start » My Computer » Tools » Folder Options. Select the View tab.
  • Check - Show hidden files and folders
  • Uncheck - Hide file extensions for known types
  • Uncheck - Hide protected operating system files
Click Yes to confirm, then OK to exit.

=====================================

Boot into Safe Mode. Please restart your computer and before the Windows logo appear, tap F8 repeatedly. A menu should appear, select Safe Mode from the menu and then hit Enter on your keyboard. (this will take a while, so don't worry, just wait)

=====================================

Uninstall Programs

Click Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs, and then remove the following program/s (if present): NavExcel
=====================================

Run HijackThis

Please open HJT, click Do a system scan only, and then place a checkmark beside each of these entries:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [navapp] C:\Program Files\NavExcel\NavHelper\v2.0.4d\navapp.exe
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://kl.bar.need2find.com/KL/menusearch.html?p=KL
O18 - Filter: text/html - {2AB289AE-4B90-4281-B2AE-1F4BB034B647} - (no file)

* If you're the only Administrator of the computer and didn't set this Restriction, fix it as well :

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

After placing all the checkmarks, close all windows (except HJT), and then hit Fix Checked. When it finishes, exit HJT.

=====================================

* Delete this folder (if found) -

C:\Program Files\NavExcel\

=====================================

Run ATF Cleaner
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

=====================================

Restart your computer

=====================================

Run an online scan at Panda's ActiveScan
  • Please go here and perform a full system scan. (use Internet Explorer)
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
  • A new window will open...click the big Check Now button.
  • Enter your Country.
  • Enter your State/Province.
  • Enter your Valid Email and click send.
  • Select either Home User or Company.
  • Click the big Scan Now button.
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it.
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan.
  • Click on Local Disks to start the scan.
  • Once finished, click see report, then click Save report.
NOTE: Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.

=====================================

In your next reply, please include these log(s):
  • HijackThis (new)
  • Panda

Hi, :thumbsup:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

NOTE: This is a new version, so please download it again.

=====================================

Boot into Safe Mode. Please restart your computer and before the Windows logo appear, tap F8 repeatedly. A menu should appear, select Safe Mode from the menu and then hit Enter on your keyboard. (this will take a while, so don't worry, just wait)

=====================================

=====================================

Uninstall Programs

Click Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs, and then remove the following program/s (if present): Kazaa Lite K++ v2.4.3
LimeWire 1.6b
LimeWire 1.6d
Viewpoint Media Player

The first 3 are P2P softwares, and they contain malware, so we recommend you to uninstall them. Read here for more info about P2P softwares.

=====================================

Restart your computer

=====================================

In your next reply, please include these log(s):
  • HijackThis (new)
  • C:\rapport.txt
Also tell us how your computer is running now :flowers:

.
Good luck,
Jet Ian

My computer is running great! Hell, all of this has improved performance to the point that my friend thought I did a fresh reinstall. I'm getting killer speeds on my net downloads and I've never seen my system so clean! Thank you sooo much, I really do appreciate your help! :thumbsup:

Cool :thumbsup: Glad we could be of help!

Your log is now clean! Posted Image If you still have any other problems/questions, just post them here.

Now that you're clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

1.) Re-Hide System Files and Folders:
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option
  • Click Yes to confirm
  • Click OK
2.) Reset and Re-enable your System Restore

We need to do this to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Click Start » Run » ( type: SYSDM.CPL ) » OK
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check - Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply.
  • Uncheck - Turn off System Restore.
  • Click OK.
3.) How to Prevent Re-Infection

Please take your time reading on this list, it is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Windows Updates (a must!) - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this, open Internet Explorer, then and select Tools » Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • Firewall (a must!) - It is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Kerio and ZoneAlarm.
  • Anti-Virus (a must!) - It is also a must have. Two good programs are Avast and AVG, they're both free.
    Note: You must only use 1 (one) AV because if you have 2 AVs, it will conflict with each other and will only make your system slow.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

Jet Ian
