Hey gang!  Not posting for me this time!  Something is definitely amiss with my niece's laptop.  She keeps getting pop ups in IE 10 - including in new tabs.  Also, when I open, I think it was CCleaner, I get a message asking if I want to close Google Chrome - yet I didn't launch Google Chrome - I'm trying to find it in startup programs but I can't remember the utiIity I use for that on my laptop as my laptop is still out of commission.

Scans with Avast free anti-virus and free Malwarebytes indicated no malicious items were detected.

The machine is running Windows 7 and IE 10.

Attached and pasted are the requisite DDS files along with my gratitude for your assistance.

Thank you!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

step1.gif In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/505491 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

step2.gifIf you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from the following link if you no longer have it available and save it to your destop.

    DDS.com Download Link
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control can be found HERE.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hey, gang!  Per the bot I've posted and attached new DDS files.  Also, the bot asked me to specify if I'm running a 32 or 64 bit OS - it's 64 bit.

Thanks again for all your help!

Hello NYDingbat,
  • Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
  • In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Follow This Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Follow This Topic. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

  • Finally, please reply using the Post button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.

1.
Download AdwCleaner
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
***Note: Windows Vista and Windows 7 users:
Right click in the adwCleaner.exe and select
    Run%20as%20admin.png
  • Click the Delete button.
  • A logfile will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  • Please post the content of that logfile in your next reply.
  • Or you can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[R1].txt.
2.
  • Download RogueKiller on the desktop
  • Close all the running processes
  • Under Vista/Seven, right click -> Run as Administrator
  • Otherwise just double-click on RogueKiller.exe
  • When prompted, Click Scan
  • A report should open, give its content to your helper. (RKreport could also be found next to the executable)
  • If RogueKiller has been blocked, do not hesitate to try a few times more. If really won't run, rename in winlogon.exe (or winlogon.com) and try again
Things to include in your next reply::
AdwCleaner log
Roguekiller log

Sorry - I'm unclear on the Adwcleaner - above in the instructions for Windows 7 and Vista say right click and choose - I'm assuming "Run as aministrator" but the instructions themselves appear as "Run%20as%"

Then, when I launched the app using "Run as administrator" I couldn't find the indicated "Delete" button on the screen that launched, I never ran it.

I'm sorry - I still don't see the "Delete" button you're referring to when I launch the Adwcleaner.

More troubles - the "Clean" button is dimmed for me, as is the "Report" button.  The "Scan", "Uninstall" and "Donate" buttons appear operable.  I'm running this as an admin, so I'm not sure what the problem is.  I don't think I screwed anything up!  I hope not!

I didn't run the scan as your instructions were to click the "Clean" button.  Awaiting further instruction...

Thanks much!

Welp, you're gonna kill me. Thought the AdwCleaner file would save itself like all the others, but apparently not. Was ready to paste it here but let the damned laptop reboot without pasting first. I did get a peek at it - a couple of registry keys were deleted, I believe. And there was some activity with Google Chrome. Damn it! The good news is, I reran it just for giggles and there was nothing in the file shown to be cleaned.

To make matters worse, I just could not get RogueKiller to run. I renamed it, I even turned off the anti-virus and still, ugozzo.

Any other steps to take or should all of us use this laptop go about our business and see what happens?

I'm sorry! :-(

I'll have to check with my brother-in-law - I'm at my sister's - I think I can get my hands on one.  Want me to download Rogue Killer to the flash and run it from there?
