Hello guys,

For almost two weeks my computer has been freezing constantly. There isn't really a pattern to the freezing; it stops whether I'm watching a video, surfing the web, listening to music, and the computer is sometimes turned on for hours before it happens. The laptop doesn't emit any sort of sound when it freezes (the video/music sound will loop if it happens then) and from what I have experienced, it doesn't continue working after 10-30 seconds like it happens to other situations I've read about that have gone through this same problem.

The freezing started to occur a few days after I tried to improve my wireless internet connection (long story short, I bought a new router when I realized my roommates' one was extremely old). Before buying and configuring the new router, I tried to work with the other one by downloading the router utility program (the router was an Airport Extreme Base Station). After discarding the Airport and configuring the new router, the laptop wouldn't connect to the wireless network so we called customer service and they helped us figure out what was causing the connection issue.

The computer began freezing a day or so after the aforementioned events. I know very little about computers so after doing some quick research I did a few things like check if the fan was working properly and the laptop wasn't overheating (it seems to be working properly), re-install the graphics and audio card, and trim the amount of programs running on startup.

Any and all help you could provide will be greatly appreciated. Below are the laptop's specs:

Dell Inspiron 5323 Inter Core i3-2367M CPU @ 1.4GHz

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit

RAM: 6.00 GB

Hello,

Before I install and run the diagnostic you suggested, I should say that my significant other reformatted the laptop yesterday evening (it is his, not mine). After reformatting it worked fine. However, it froze this morning after around 20 minutes of use (same pattern as before). If running the diagnostic will still be of use then I will certainly do it, I just wanted to update you on the situation in case another action is required in this circumstance.

No problem :).

Freezes occur for a variety of reasons, some of which would not be impacted by a format/reinstall of the O/S:  overheating, failing hard drive, other hardware problem, these come to mind.

If you post the data as requested...I can look and try to eliminate one or more suspects.

Since you did a clean install on 24 August...what makes you think it's a Windows 7 problem?  The clean install would seem to point to a hardware problem of some type, IMO.

Why are you running a system...without any AV program?

Did you run Dell Diagnostics...before attempting reinstall of Win 7?

He did the clean install after I began this thread. As for the lack of an AV, I ran Minitoolbox after he uninstalled the AV that came with the pc as he wanted to use a different one.

Yes, we ran Dell Diagnostics and passed all the tests except for one related to GPS. He called Dell Tech Support and they did another clean install (with some different steps) and ran another set of diagnostics but the computer passed all of those as well. The computer has frozen several times since the last clean install; the first time it took half a day, the rest about 20 minutes to two hours. We haven't used it today since it is inevitable that it will freeze again. One thing out of the ordinary we noticed is that the gps card was not functioning, but we don't know when that stopped working or why it happened.

I agree that it doesn't appear to be a software issue. Should I close this topic and ask for assistance in another section of the forum?

Start computer in safemode with networking and see if the problem reoccurs.

Try downloading Speccy and then install the program.  To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.
. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot
. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
. On your next reply, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post.

one related to GPS

Can you expand some information about this card?

Hello,

Speccy would not run in Safe Mode (CPU dll init failed - error 2) so I booted up in normal mode and took the snapshot you requested. Here it is:

I will restart the computer on safe mode and will post if it freezes again.

Software :

1. Obtain all updated drivers after reinstall, chipset, video, audio and Network drivers from here http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/inspiron-13z-5323

2. There is not a specific fix for the latest BIOS (A16) but it could be a last resort or option.

3. A clean boot may be required to identify particular driver/software if the first 2 has not resolved the problem.

Hardware:

1. Make sure that heat is not an issue when on short or longer usage by monitoring the temperature. Was it cleaned internally?

2. Remove one stick of RAM alternately then check on the difference.

3. Run Startup repair and or checkdisk repair to check on hard drive consistency.
