Good Evening BC Community,

Let's get right to it shall we?

OS:Windows XP SP3
Browser: Chrome 28.0.1500.95 m
Browser Extensions: FlashPlayer 11 and Google Docs 0.5
Java Installed?: Yes, Version 7 Build 25 (1.7.0_25-b17)
Antivirus Software?: No
Antispyware / Antimalware?: Yes, MalwareBytes Free (1.75.0.1300) and Spybot (1.6.2.0). Both residents running.

What seems to be the problem officer?:  Well, I'm not 100% sure when the problems started... probably after installing some coupon printer at the insistence of my girlfriend (even though my senses told me it was a bad idea). Randomly, the page we would be trying to access through Chrome (even in safemode and incognito) would get redirected to random pages about travel, ads, and the like. In addition, a small box (300x250 pix) appears in the absolute left of web pages with an "ad carousel," and sometimes it is a genuine adbar. I believe this problem to be complicated malware and/or a virus because inspecting the element / source shows that the HTML of the website being rendered has been affected to include the javascript that produces the adbox. See the code section below for a web page relevant to the box (HiJackThis @ Sourceforge). There are also random popups telling me to update flashplayer with no option to cancel the box outside of the X button.

I'll save you some trouble - The interesting bit happens after this line:

Mod Edit:  Removed code at OP's request - Hamluis.

My Opinion: For what it's worth, I've already spent a little bit of time looking at the code. From what I can discern from the HTML and Javascript, the script is pulling a list of ads and an expiration date, along with a referral key, from a website "hxxp://a.fsdn.com/con/js/files.js?1375820886" (Do not click on that if it links. I broke it with a space) and then does some stuff to determine what OS you're using and goes from there. All this data was extracted from what Chrome saw as the HTML for the page itself.

What have you done so far?: When the craziness started I ran Spybot and deleted a bunch of stuff, then ran MalwareBytes and also deleted a bunch of stuff. I think I have logs. If I do, you will see them below. I have downloaded ComboFix and HijackThis but have not run them as of yet. I have tried getting rid of this stuff myself; however, Kaspersky's Rootkit Detection/Removal tool didn't see anything and I didn't want to dig into my system internals without oversight.

Hello do not run ComboFix unless asked, thanks

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:

  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Please Download TDSSkiller
Launch it.
Click on change parameters-Select TDLFS file system
Click on "Scan".
Please post the LOG report(log file should be in your C drive)
Do not change the default options on scan results.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool. Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
  • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.
  • >>>
  • Last run ESET.
    • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
    • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png icon on your desktop.
    • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
    • Click the Start button.
    • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
    • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
    • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
    • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
    • When the scan completes, click List Threats
    • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
    • Click the Back button.
    • Click the Finish button.
    • NOTE:Sometimes if ESET finds no infections it will not create a log.

boopme,

Thank you for your response.

I posted this topic with its log in the Malware / Virus / etc removal forum and am currently being aided by Gringo. I meant to delete this thread but got caught up in the removal process and school (so I forgot).
