Posted 10 August 2013 - 02:09 PM

I recently came across a topic on this very website by an individual who was experiencing nearly, if not exactly, the same issue that I was:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/502656/rootkitbootharbingera-infection-and-concerns/

As a means of background, I have already done a lot of research into this topic and have already run several anti-Trojan/rootkit/malware/virus programs (SuperAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes, MSE, Kaspersky TDSSKiller, Trojan Remover, [I also downloaded Kaspersky Rescue Disk, but have not run it]).  The only one that was able to identify the Harbinger rootkit was TDSSKiller (in < 30 seconds!), which then "Cured" it.  That seemed to do the trick as previous to that Windows would take a long time to load and afterwards not.  If I understand Harbinger correctly it loads itself in the BIOS before the OS, then allows the OS to load which would seem to explain the lag.

Also, I downloaded and ran RKill and it said that it found "symptoms of ZeroAccess rootkit".  It identified several file paths, but whenever I went to delete those file paths Windows Explorer would crash.  It seems as if I can move the folder around on the C:/ drive, but not to another drive nor into the Recycle Bin.  I moved it into TDSSKiller's Quarantined Items folder, but I honestly don't know if that does any good or matters.  The date of these folders coincides with other things I have found during my attempts to clean the computer that place the infection as possibly having occurred on or about August 3, 2013.

I am hesitant to allow the infected PC to access the web due to nature of Harbinger & ZeroAccess which, if I understand correctly, allow a remote user to have access to your system.  So, I am writing this post from another PC.  If it will be necessary to connect to the web to best assist whomever assists me with my topic I will.  So far I have been installing all of the aforementioned "anti-" programs via a USB stick which I used to download them from the non-infected PC.

I am hoping to get a better idea of the current status of my PC and any go-forward procedures.  I have read that once a hard drive is compromised by a backdoor Trojan, as I believe ZeroAccess is, the PC is never completely safe to use even if the offending files are removed and that the only way to truly be free of it is to re-format the hard drive and re-install the OS.

  • Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
    Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: If you encounter a message "illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion" and no programs will run - please just reboot and that will resolve that error.

Please do the following:
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".

Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Press the WinKey + R to open a run box, type Notepad > click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/503926/help-with-harbinger-rootkit/#entry3129766

Driver::
aeakuuaa
bjtseusj
hezxidbc
qqsyeqwi
zyzigjyj

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"MSC"=-

Collect::
c:\program files\Microsoft Security Client\mssecex.exe

ClearJavaCache::
Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As... Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save ...

CFScriptB-4.gif
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix may request an update; please allow it.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

NEXT

Please run the following:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit (MBAR) from here http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/mbar/ and save it to your desktop.
Direct link to the file: http://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mbar
  • Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided on that same page.
  • Caution: This is a beta version so please be sure to read the disclaimer and back up any important data before using.
  • Doubleclick on the MBAR file you downloaded.
  • Approve the UAC prompt in Vista and newer operating systems.
  • Click OK on the next screen, to allow the package to extract the contents of the file to it's own folder, mbar.
  • By default, this will be on your desktop, though you can choose another location if you wish. We advise using the default location for simplicity.
  • mbar.exe will launch automatically. On some systems, this may take a few extra seconds. Please be patient and wait for the program to open.
  • After reading the Introduction, click 'Next' if you agree.
  • On the Update Database screen, click on the 'Update' button.
  • Once you see 'Success: Database was successfully updated' click on 'Next'.
  • Click the 'Scan' button.
    • With some infections, you may see two messages boxes.
    • 1.'Could not load protection driver'. Click 'OK'.
    • 2.'Could not load DDA driver'. Click 'Yes' to this message, to allow the driver to load after a restart. Allow the computer to restart. Continue with the rest of these instructions.
  • If malware is found, do NOT press the Cleanup button when the scan completes. Click EXIT.
    Then, please send the following logs as attachments to your reply. These logs are located in the mbar folder on your desktop where the tool extracted itself to.

    mbar-log-2013-xx-xx(xx-xx-xx).txt (where xx-xx(xx-xx-xx) is the date and time of the scan)
    system-log.txt

This may be a silly question, but do I copy the URL (the BleepingComputer one) in that box as well?  Or, do I just begin at "Driver::"?

Is it necessary to have MBAR update? The reason that I ask is because, as I mentioned in my original post, I have not allowed the infected PC on the web. I copied MBAR onto a USB stick and saved it onto the Desktop of the infected PC. If it is necessary, and safe, to connect the infected PC to the web for this step I can. Just let me know.

we need a connection for the file to be uploaded, so just connect for the ComboFix run and the MBAR update

Also, please disable Simply Super Trojan Remover so it doesn't start on reboot, or remove it.

OK.  I long ago removed Trojan Remover.  But something similar did happen.  I have already run ComboFix and it did require a restart and I did not think to disable SuperAntiSpyware from starting at boot-up, so it did.  I am sorry.  It totally did not occur to me.  I hope that it did not screw up ComboFix.  I will post the log and re-run if you feel it is necessary.

I will update and run MBAR now.

Upon closer look, SAS's real-time protection is off and "Scan at start-up" is not checked.  So, maybe it will not have interfered with ComboFix.

Log looks good,

Please run the following:

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shutdown your antivirus to avoid any conflicts.
  • Right-mouse click JRT.exe and select Run as administrator
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message

NEXT

Download AdwCleaner from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Run AdwCleaner and select Delete
  • Once done it will ask to reboot, allow the reboot
  • On reboot a log will be produced, please attach the content of the log to your next reply
NEXT
  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Just as a means of an update.  I ran home during my lunch.  I was able to run JRT, AdwCleaner, and MBAM to completion.  ESET took a bit longer to run so I had to leave to go back to work before it finished.  I will able to post everything (including ESET which I imagine will be complete by then :) ) when I get home this evening.
