Hi Folks,

On Monday 5th of August Avast notified my wife of the Win32:Evo-gen [Susp] virus.
It stuck 2 instances of it into the virus chest.

In trying to investigate this, one thing I noticed was that every time I started up windows and also when I started Windows  media player, I would get another couple or more Avast messages regarding this and that they have been quarantined.

The Avast Alert was a RED box with the info:-

SUSPICIOUS FILE BLOCKED

Object: C:\ProgramData\...\Indiv01.key
Infection: Win32:Evo-gen [susp]

Moved to Chest

Process: C:\Program Files\...\wmplayer.exe

The threat was detected and blocked when the file was created or modified.

In the Virus Chest it was shown as (eg):-

NAME            ORIGINAL LOCATION

Indiv01.key    C:ProgramData\Microsoft\DRM\cache\Indiv_SID_1-1-5-21-489863269-3332119017-765086-1000

LAST CHANGE            TRANSFER TIME       VIRUS

16/10/2010 12:56:07   8/08/2013 20:07:04     WIN32:Evo-gen [Susp]

Strange thing was that if I right-clicked on the entries in the virus chest and selected scan it would find no problem and rename the 'Win32:Evo-gen [susp]'  to  'no-virus' on the right hand side of the entry. I thought then perhaps this is a false positive, but could not find anything much on the web confirming that it was. After a couple of nights of running scans and investigating the issue on boot up on the evening of the 3rd night I had an initial instance on bootup but no further instances of it when running up windows media player.

This made me think it was a false positive and that following a Avast update after boot had cleared the problem. Anyway to be sure, I ran scans by Avast, Malwarebytes, Malwarebyte Antirootkit, Superantispyware and ESET online scanner. Again, all came back clean. However, when trying TrendMicro Housecall online scan Avast once again reported the same virus again Win32:Evo-gen [susp], but this time indicating that Housecall was the culprit. Coincidence????? Mmm. Not sure now if this was a false positive that I was seeing of if something has got its hooks in my system.

AVAST VIRUS CHEST ENTRY (Showing only 1 of 2 entries received)

NAME                 ORIGINAL LOCATION

VSB28E0K.00P  C:\Users\Architect\AppData\Local\Temp\HouseCall

LAST CHANGE            TRANSFER TIME       VIRUS

10/08/2013 14:32:40   10/08/2013 15:32:44  WIN32:Evo-gen [Susp]

Right clicking on the entry in the virus chest and selecting scan,  results again it saying no-virus and changing the Win32:Evo-gen to 'no-virus'

Could someone help me determine if I do have something that’s lurking here or if it’s a false positive

Thanks in advance

Incidently, Comodo Firewal picked up JRT (downloaded from Bleeping computer) as Malicious as determined its online scan. I subsequently deleted it from my desktop. Of course that could of been a false positve too.?!?!?

Welcome aboard p22002758.gif

JRT is a very legit tool so Comodo is wrong.

You should report it at Comodo forum.

p22002970.gif Download Security Check from here or here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

NOTE 1. If one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.
NOTE 2 SecurityCheck may produce some false warning(s), so leave the results reading to me.

p22002970.gif Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
    • Other Services
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

p22002970.gif Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click Go and post the result.

p22002970.gif Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

p22002970.gifDownload Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE to your Desktop.
  • Unzip downloaded file.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • DO NOT click on the Cleanup button. Simply exit the program.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log-xxxxx.txt and system-log.txt

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.

RKILL & MB Antirootkit Scan was run out of sequence. RKILL was run before MB Antirootkit and I had to go out in a hurrey and aborted the initial MB rootkit scan and shut the system down. Upon my return I ran another MB Antirootkit scan to completion and posted the results.  So unfortunately I did effectively reboot after running RKILL which was contrary to the instructions of Do not reboot until instructed

Hopefully that about does it.

Posting now.

Thanks in advance

  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

How is computer doing?

Update Adobe Flash Player: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Make sure you UN-check Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus

NOTE 1: Beginning with Adobe Flash Version 11.3, the universal installer includes the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Flash Player.
NOTE 2: While installing make sure you UN-check any extra garbage which wants to install alongside.

Hi Broni,

Well, there's the rub. Although the scans done so far appear to show a clean system, I just have a gut feeling something is not right. To explain it I'll have to expand on my first post.

On my PC If I download and run the Trend Micro Housecall Online Scanner with Avast enabled.  Near the end of the Trend Micro Scan Avast picks up 2 files as being malicious and puts them into the Virus Chest under the guise of Win32:Evo-gen.  In Avast if I right click either entry and select Scan from the pop-up, then Avast finds nothing wrong and relabels the entry from

'Win32:Evo-gen'  to  'no-virus'.  Now, in Avast if I extract any of the entries to a file on my DESKTOP by right clicking on it and selecting extract from the pop-up, then upload it to VirusTotal for analysis I get some interesting results.

VirusTotal reports that 18 out of 45 tools is saying that it is Malicious in one form or another and identifying it by various names.

The file appears to belong to the TFC tool by Oldtimer which was run earlier as part of this thread.

Why Avast picks this up when Tren Micro does a scan and not when Avast does one is beyond me.

If it is TFC, then perhaps what I'll try is deleting it and running another TrendMicro HouseCall online Scan and see if it is picked out again from Avast.

Incidently I run the same Virus protection on my laptop (Avast AV and Comodo FW). I can do a TM Housecall scan on my Laptop and Avast picks up nothing which is probably because TFC is not on my LapTop.

Any ideas / explanation would be welcome.

BTW- If there are any Typo errors in the Cut Pasting of the VirusTotal stuff its because I'm using Text from Picture with MS Oneote.

Thanks in advance

BTW I'm not saying that TFC is malicious, maybe it is being flagged by certain AV's as a false positive.

Both are clearly false positives.

TFC for very obvious reason - it's a very legit file used thousands of times every day by thousands of users.

As for the other it seems to be created by TrendMicro HouseCall scanner:

VS638TAH.OOR   C:\Users\Architect\AppData\Local\Temp\HouseCall  12/08/2013 20:21:38   12/08/2013 21:21:42   W1n32:Evo-geri [Susp]

It's always a good idea to report such issue at Avast forum.

If nothing else....

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll remove all old restore points and create fresh, clean restore point.

Turn system restore off.
Restart computer.

Hi Broni,

First of all I would like to Thank you very much for your help.

I am however still a little bit confused about your reply, because the filename of the file VS638TAH.00R which resided in the HouseCall folder and shown on the left in Avast's Virus Chest (in my post above) and TFC.exe  seem to be one and the same file.

VS638TAH.00R was extracted from the virus chest to a file then uploaded to VIRUSTOTAL and scanned there. The information in VIRUSTOTALS  report shows it to have an internal name of TFC.EXE:-

VIRUSTOTAL File Detail TAB Displayed the following

The file being studied is a Portable Executable file! More specifically, it is a Win32 EXE file for the Windows GUI subsystem.

PE signature block

Publisher OldTimer Tools
Product TFC

Like most programs HouseCall creates some temporary files.

One of them for whatever reason triggered Avast but as I said it definitely looks like false positive.

There is no question that TFC is false positive.

BTW I just downloaded TFC and my Avast didn't say anything.

I even scanned it with Avast and it says "No threats found".

Hi Broni,

Yes same as me. For me Avast doesn't pick up anything on its own scans. Avast seems only to when TM Housecall does the scan with TFC on board. weird. Anyway, I think we've wasted enough time on this one.

Thanks again Broni.
