Did you close all the application while shut down your computer? If it can not shut down, it will show an error message. What's that?

System manufacturer and model?

Have you checked the system website troubleshooting page?

What you are suggesting is a hard shutdown.  If there are applications running when this is done it can damage files.  This is a last resort option only.

It would be useful to know the make and model of this computer, as was requested previously.

Do you have SP1 (Service Pack 1)?

This problem was corrected via a hot fix and eventually became part of SP1.  So if you don't have SP1 you should download it to this computer.

CAT can be downloaded here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/crisistool/

Its a very small file, Goto More fixes and Check fix Shutdown Click on Apply fixes

Your computer is a laptop may be you should try removing the battery and power cord connected, Press and HOLD the power button for 15 seconds, put the battery and power back then try.. it should work as well..
