Hi!

I've had this problem for a couple of days now, and I've ran out of ideas. I really hope one of you fine people can help me out!

Background:

Please note that this section probably isnt related at all: Not too long ago (just about a week after I formated my computer for the first time in about 3 years), my computer started running INCREDIBLY slow. Just opening a folder could take over a minute. Eventually I ran it in safe mode, everything was completely fine. I then checked all the processes running, and as it turned out, Avast antivirus was not running in safe mode, but was running when i started windows normally. Sure enough, even though it didn't seem to take up a lot of recourses, Avast alone had lagged my computer down to an unusable standard. This was solved around a week ago. It probably has nothing to do with this problem but I thought I'd include it anyway.

Now to my new problem. My computer started running slowly from time to time, occassionally freezing completely for about 10 seconds and then going back to normal. This all started about a week ago, and has gotten gradually worse. At first it would, as I noted, happen from time to time. I for example uninstalled Origin which used had an update, and normally uses a lot of recourses, and everything worked fine. I thought I had solved it, but sure enough it came back eventually. So far I've uninstalled more or less all programs that were installed close to the first symptoms, and none of that has helped.

Right now the computer runs slow every single time i start it. The start-up is as fast as always, but as soon as I get on my desktop, each click takes at least 5 seconds to react. Eventually it just either freezes for 10-20 seconds, or it just goes in to "normal-mode", and everything works fine for a seemingly random time, before it either gets slow or freezes up again. This never stops, even if I have the computer running for a long time. I've tried defrag, check disk (chkdsk) and Temp File Cleaner without success.

My computer also shuts down incredibly slow. Usually I have to power it off after waiting for about 20-30 minutes. After I ran TFC I've only had one restart though, and that one was smoothe and flawless, so I'm not sure if this part of the problem still persists.

That's all the information I have now. If you need more info or have any suggestions, please, please reply!

Many thanks and best regards!

EDIT: And I'm ofcourse not using Avast anymore. I tried uninstalling my current antivirus and that didn't help this time unfortunally.

Try reading through this, it's very good, IMO:  Slow Computer-browser Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic87058.html .

Then...please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

List last 10 Event Viewer log

  List Installed Programs

List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link to the snapshot.

Thanks for your reply Louis!

I've cleaned out my computer and fans thoroughly, and checked every possibility I can think off. I have however not monitored the temperatures since my format about a month ago, but they were fine then.

It's not only browser related so I skipped all those parts. I only use Chrome with no toolbar, only addons is AdBlock and Google Docs.

Also not network related, so I skipped that.

My disk was recently formatted, and has since then never come close to being full. I have refrained from installing any programs that I wont use. I've done a clean-up and a defrag today.

Tried sfc /scannow. I've checked my running services and my start-up programs. I've disabled the indexing service, although this has never been a problem in the past.

I did not defrag since this is done on a weekly basis. It is however done on wednesdays, but I didnt have time right now so I will let it do it automatically while I sleep tonight.

I did not disable visual affects, as my computer has been running windows 7 for 5 years, and though it might help in its current state, it's not the issue. There's something else wrong.

Hello rebusmannen -
From your Speccy Report -

CPU : Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz: 47 °C
Hard Drives: 699GB SATA SAMSUNG HD753LJ SCSI Disk Device (SATA): 23 °C
Motherboard Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. X48-DS5 (Socket 775): 35 °C
Graphics : VW222 (1680x1050@59Hz): 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (ATI): 92 °C

From ATI 4800 Series Graphics page on Running Temperatures : Load temperature: 95°C 90°C 82°C
Yours is in the "higher range" but only just ............

All your other temperatures are well within the "normal" running range.
Who / what told you that your system is "Burning Up" ??

NOTE - Status: Bad : From the report on your Hard Drive, unrelated to your temperatures

Can you please list your Antivirus program, since I seem to have missed it in your reply.

P.S. Please disable Wordwrap in your Notepad responses

Thank You -

Well...I see an O/S that has plenty of file corruption...which may mean that the hard drive has problems.

At this point...I would remove any valued data files...then run SeaTools for Windows, long generic diagnostic, on the hard drive...before putting any further speculation into what is wrong here.

Guide, SeaTools for Windows

Hi!

Noknojon: Thanks for your reply! First off, I ment my graphics card was burning up (more on that further down), the rest of my system is clearly fine! My antivirus was AVG, but since Avast! was the problem last time something like this happened, i had uninstalled AVG and had no AV installed when I posted :)

My Graphics card has previously been around 80 if even that when I'm only running windows, it's been going up to nearly 100 when i run games with high graphics, but not when just idling on my desktop. Also I can now hear the fan from the graphics card going in to some sort of overdrive mode every now and then, that just doesn't feel right. As I posted my last reply I also got a few temporary artifact-like things on my screen, that has never happened before (with this GFX card, had the same symptoms when one of my previous card overheated about 6 years ago). Are you sure it's running fine? I checked the fan, and it's running fine. Also cleaned it up a bit. Seems a bit better now, cause at least it doesnt go in to that over-drive mode on the fan when I'm just idling in windows anymore.

In regards to the actualy topic, yes I assumed the harddrive was the issue, even though I hoped it wouldnt be. Yesterday the entire disk crashed and Windows wouldnt even load anymore. Luckily, I had already backed up everything I needed on my brothers computer, and now I've installed a new 2TB drive instead of my old 600GB one, everything is running smoothe so far!

Thanks very much for your help guys, and if you have any ideas or additional information regarding my graphics card I would be happy to know, but at the moment it feels better and less risky to over-heat than it normally does! I previously sometimes had a problem with my drivers for it crashing in a few games, even with the latest drivers! I will check if that problem persits as well :)

Thank you again guys, have a great day!

Best regards

It is not rare for these cards to be about 90C plus when under any running state ......

Mine would always run in the 90s while all other temps were well under 40C.

However I think the Hard Drive issue is Much Greater at this time for you -

Please attend to that NOW and forget all other problems.

Thanks -

As I wrote further down in my response, the hard drive issue has already been fixed! Thanks so much for your help!

In regards of the graphics card, I started getting a few flickering green pixels on some areas of the screen yesterday, which has happened before on my old PC, before the graphics card melted. I'm not really comfortable with this, does anyone have any clues on what causes it and how to fix it?

EDIT: I'm sure you're right about the heat, cause this doesn't seem to be overheating, it seems to be caused by something else. For example, I play a lot of FIFA 13, and I can go from one menu to another, back and forth as much as I want, and one menu will always have some green flickering pixels on some spots, and the other menu doesn't have any at all. I really have no clue where this problem has come from.

This problem is pretty weird, I don't think it's hardware related actually, but I dunno what could cause it. It's not like I randomly get graphics problems, it's more like it can't handle certain types of textures. The same background in FIFA 13 always has little green artifacts and pixelsflickering, while the other backgrounds in the menu don't have any problem at all. I saw the same green flickering pixels on another, similar background. It's so weird. All the backgrounds it has happened on so far have been dark grey/black with some form of pattern on them.

Also my graphics cards fan still does this thing where it goes in to full power mode whenever I run basically any game, even old ones that could probably be ran with an on-board graphics card :S it never used to do that when it was new. Sometimes the fan even does this for a short while when I'm just at the desktop. I mean, it's summer outside, but I live in the north of Sweden so it's not THAT warm, and the comp is park almost directly underneath my window, so it really shouldnt be overheating from running these games.

Update: It somehow seems heat related after all. When I use Speedfan to increase my GFX cards fan, almost all those flickering green (and sometimes red) pixel disappear instanly. I've had it on 100 % for a while now, and cant see any problems with the graphics anymore. My fan was at 37 % when in idle mode. Now that i'ts at 100 %, it sounds like that overdrive mode it does sometimes when I run games.

512MB ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (ATI): Is the only Graphics installed.
Notes with the report state - Noise Level: Moderate.

For maximum Temps there is a great range out there and most are 80C to 90C = Good to Normal
Some sources says they only shut down at 120C, some - 130C.

Further quotes say "The ATI 4850 is designed to run at up to 105°C before throttling it's clocks."

An inadequate or defective power supply (PSU) can prevent the processor / graphics card from functioning properly
Refer to Article GPU-104 for instructions on how to determine if the PSU is inadequate or defective. Defective Power Supply Units can also cause "Pixilation" problems

If you are overly concerned then purchase a suitable matching alternate brand of Graphics Card -

The new HDD looks OK  - Status: Good - Temperature: 24 °C (I wish mine ran that cool)

Oh, that's very good to know! And yes, the noise is fine now that I have the fan at normal speed :)

Now that you menation it, maybe the new HDD require more from the power supply, also I turned two of my fans up earlier so that might be part of the issue. I'm gonna look in to it, thank you very much!
