I built a pretty high-end computer two months ago. For about five weeks I had no issues, but then I started getting random periodic freezes. It's not exactly the same every time, and I don't really know how to investigate a total crash. The specs are:
Asus Sabertooth Z87
Asus GTX 770
16GB DDR3-1600 Crucial RAM
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD
Windows 8 Professional
The freezes have happened once or twice a week, about seven times now. I'm not running anything computationally taxing or a game or anything when it happens, usually all I have open when the freezes occur are:
(sometimes) Libre Office Calc
(sometimes) Media Player Classic Home Cinema
I don't think any process is particularly busy when it happens, but I didn't have task manager up at the time. Often I'm just switching from one window to another when it happens. Typical CPU usage is very low. RAM usage couldn't be more than 6 GB at the most. According to SpeedFan, temperatures are also very low on the CPU, GPU, Motherboard, and hard drives. The fans aren't busy when the crash occurs but I think maybe spin up slightly faster a few seconds after, can't say for sure.
Several of the freezes have had these symptoms: after leaving the computer on for several hours doing nothing, I come back to it and it is responsive for only a few seconds before suddenly stopping. The cursor won't move, the keyboard does nothing, even just pressing Caps Lock or Num Lock doesn't change the state on the keyboard. I'm forced to do a hard reset. But some of them are after a period of continuous use.
One time when it happened the screen became filled with blue-speked white checkerboard squares covering half the screen. That one made me think it seemed hardware or temperature related and that's when I started checking the temps, but they're always fine.
On one occasion the mouse icon changed to a larger, kind of fuzzy/blurry looking one. I was able to see several different large mouse icons suddenly appear, like the scroll icons and the pointing hand one before it finally froze.
Once instead of freezing suddenly, the mouse became very choppy for a few seconds then it froze. Another time, it got choppy but didn't freeze, I could continue using it with difficulty. I started closing all the programs and noticed some warning about Nvidia drivers pop up in the system tray. I think I saw "System Interrupts" or something on the top of the task manager list by CPU usage, but still only like 8%. After I closed everything it seemed to get better but I restarted anyway.
When the couple crashes occured it was with the Nvidia drivers that I installed from the CD. I updated them to the latest version but the freezes continue. Seems like they might be to blame but I really don't know.
So if anyone knows what's going on here or at least can point me in the right direction figuring this out, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.
