I've recently built my PC and I keep getting seemingly random blue screens of death. I thought it was Steam causing it but one just happened now without steam open. I think the drivers are up to date so I'm not sure what it could be. I'm using the stock intel cooler for now while I wait for my Antec cooler to come, temperatures don't seem to exceed 40, usually stick around 30.

PCPartPicker part list: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/1o3Pm

The minidump folder is here.

If anyone could help out I'd be exceedingly grateful,

Thanks.

Hi

:welcome: to the Bleeping Computer forum.

Thanks for uploading the dumps. It will be helpful if you provide some additional info.

:step1: A Speccy snapshot.

Generate a report about your system using Speccy by reading the guide below. Make sure to run the Speccy after running the system about one or more hour. This will give us an indication of current CPU -GPU temperature status.

Post the web link displayed by Speccy in next reply.

:step2: Microsoft System Information file.

1. Open RUN dialogue by pressing Windows key + R together.

2. Enter msinfo32 in it to open system information tool.

3. Choose File --> Save and give it the name sysinfo.

4. Attach the sysinfo file in next reply.

:step3:  A Minitoolbox log

Download Minitoolbox from the below link.

Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.

-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size

Now click "Go" and post the output in next reply

Hi

I reviewed all the dumps and various logs you provided. There is no clear pattern can be seen in the dumps. Most of them blames Windows kernel as the reason behind the crashes. Generally i recommend running a memory test to check the integrity of RAM modules. But since you have 16 GB RAM, it may take more than 24 hours to complete the test. So let us fix the software issues first and save the RAM test for later.

:step1: Update WiFI driver.

Two crash dumps directly blames your TP-Link wireless card drivers as the reason behind the crashes. The version of driver you installed is from 2011 and it is fairly old.

athrx.sys Wed Feb 23 01:47:31 2011

1. Open Control Panel --> Programs and uninstall TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 Driver . Restart the system when finished.

2. Now download and install the latest version from the below link.

    http://www.tp-link.com/resources/software/TL-WDN4800_V1_130521.zip

:step2: Update USB and Chipset driver.

Intel USB 3.0 driver is blamed in one dump. Update it and chipset drivers by following the below instructions.

1. Uninstall Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver  first.

2. Now download and install the latest drivesr from the below link.

Chipset : https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=816&DwnldID=20775&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Chipset+Software+Installation+Utility&lang=eng

USB 3.0 : https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3467&DwnldID=22824&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+USB+3.0+eXtensible+Host+Controller+Driver&lang=eng

:step3: Update graphics driver.

Your current graphics driver is from 2012 and it needs to be updated.

atikmdag.sys Fri Sep 28 07:44:57 2012

1. Remove current version by running the official uninstall tool.

    http://www2.ati.com/drivers/amd_cleanup_util_1.2.1.0.exe

Run the tool and restart the system when finished.

2. Now install the latest WHQL certified driver from the below link.

    http://www2.ati.com/drivers/13-4_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe

:step4: Uninstall known problematic softwares.

Following Gigabyte bundled softwares are known to cause issues in some systems. Please remove them immediately.

    EasyTune

    ON_OFF Charge

:step5: Update system BIOS

According to the release note of the latest BIOS, it includes several improvements.

Support Intel C2-stepping chipset
Improve SATA RAID performance
Enhance DDR performance

Download and run the Gigabyte @BIOS utility to update the BIOS.

http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Utility/mb_utility_atbios_8series.exe

Use the live update feature and the utility will automatically download and install the latest version for you.

:step6: Update SSD firmware.

Solid state drives require up to dated firmware for stable operations. There are event log errors can be seen in the Minitoolbox result which indicates a possible SSD issue.

Error: (08/04/2013 04:39:45 PM) (Source: Disk) (User: )
Description: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1.

1. Download the firmware update bootable  CD from the below link.

    http://www.plextoramericas.com/index.php/download?task=finish&cid=351&catid=166&m=0

2. Burn the CD image to a blank CD using any ISO recording app. I recommend Imgburn.

    http://download.imgburn.com/SetupImgBurn_2.5.8.0.exe

3. Read the update instructions carefully and follow it.

    http://blog.goplextor.com/?p=2769

Take your time and make sure to follow the above instructions exactly. Skipping any of the steps will make the troubleshooting harder. Report whether it makes any difference in your next reply.  If not, upload the new crash dumps for analysis.

I've installed most of the updates apart from the SSD, the @Bios which the update file didn't seem to do anything.
I'm going away for a couple of days so I won't be able to send a full response until I get home.

Thanks for your help so far, I really appreciate it.

Turns out I have a few hours before I leave. My computer doesn't actually have an optical disk drive so I've been installing things off my USB drive. This usually works, but creating a bootable USB of the SSD firmware didn't seem to work (using PowerISO - 'Create Bootable USB Drive' option). When selecting the USB drive on boot it proceeded to boot into windows anyway.

Hi

Here is the download link to the user manual of your motherboard : http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4486#manual

Read the manual. It includes step by step instructions to use @BIOS utility.

To create the bootable USB, please try RUFUS.

http://rufus.akeo.ie/

Provide the SSD update ISO as the input and it will create a bootable USB automatically based on that image.

This thread will be opened for you to reply at any time. Take your time and post your findings.

Okay the SSD update was successful. I'm still having a strange problem with @BIOS though.

When I open the App Center I just have the option to open live update:

yA0EKRi.png

So I open that and I'm given the option to install @BIOS:

5XoLioI.png

So I select that and click update:

yXT7sVT.png

It appears to install fine and gives a success message:

N1qyEwr.png

Yet when I restart there is absolutely so sign of @BIOS being installed! The live update centre shows it as 'not installed' as it did initially.

Shall I use Q-flash instead?

EDIT Disregard that, sorry. I installed it without using AppCenter and it actually installed.
