Hi

This is for Windows 7 and IE9.

I've run KIS 2010 and it reported trojan Exploit.Java.CVE2013-2423.gen  in these folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\Puddy\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\26

C:\Documents and Settings\Puddy\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\34

C:\Users\Puddy\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\26

C:\Users\Puddy\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\34

I haven't noticed any symptoms yet, but can you help clear me these out?

I've pasted DDS.txt below and attached Attach.txt :

===================================================

Viruses found in the Java cache directory are not associated with Java. The cache directory is a temporary storage location and when the browser runs an applet or application, Java stores files into its cache directory.

Emptying your Java cache should solve the problem:

How to empty Java cache

When you’ve done that, Kaspersky should come up clean.

WARNING ABOUT JAVA

Java is so widely used that it has become the most exploited program around at the moment.

In Germany, the government advised the public to temporarily stop using Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser to give it time to patch a security vulnerability that opened it to attacks.

In the US, The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java.

See these articles:

Article 1

Article 2

Article 3

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important piece of software: even if you do need it, I would recommend that you enable it in your browsers when you need it for that specific software and then disable it again afterwards.

Let me know how it goes and if there are any other problems.

Hello satchfan

Thanks for picking this up.

I didn't mention this but I'd been running Java 7 and had uninstalled Java 6.0 and manually deleted the 6.0 folders a few months ago.

Plus I'd already disabled Java in the browser so I'm surprised that I got hit by this (and in 6.0 folders).

Anyway, I've cleared the Java cache as you suggested and rerun KIS and it looks ok.

How can I be sure there's nothing hiding to cause problems later ?

Hi sbrot

There was nothing bad in your DDS logs but as a precaution we’ll run a couple of different scans and double-check.

Download and run OTL

  • download OTL to your desktop.
  • double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • click Scan all users.
  • under Custom Scan paste this in

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    consrv.dll
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /rp /s
    DRIVES
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won’t take long.

Thanks for those. I'll look as soon as I get a few minutes. Meanwhile, can you post the Extras.txt log which can be found in the same place as the OTL.txt log, (C:\Users\Puddy\Desktop).

Thanks

There are a few leftover bits and remnants of Norton that we’ll remove but nothing else seems bad.

Also, according to your OTL log, Java 7 Update 17 (64-bit) is still installed on your computer. This version is out-of-date and needs to be removed via Programs and Features.

Remove remnants of Norton

  • download the Norton Removal Tool from here and save it to your desktop.
  • double click on Norton_Removal_Tool.exe to run the tool.
  • follow the on-screen instructions.

Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

===================================================

Note: If you have MalwareBytes Anti-Malware 1.6 or higher installed and are using the Pro version or trial version, please temporarily disable it for the duration of this fix as it may interfere with the successfully execution of the script below.

Run OTL

  • double click on the icon to run it.
  • copy/paste ALL the following text written inside the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL

Run Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

I noticed that you had MBAM on your system: if you no longer have it, you can download it from here:

  • start Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware and update it, (“Update” tab}
  • once it is updated, click on “Scanner” tab, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • when the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • when removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • the log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

NOTE: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Run Security Check

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.

  • save it to your Desktop.
  • double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • a Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Logs to include with the next post:

Hi Satchfan

That all looked ok, just to say there were no reboots in the Norton removal, and Mbam didn't find any malicious items.

One thing - I'll need to reinstall (then disable) Java at the end, so please let me know when I can go ahead with that.

As you say, it all looks good.

Although Kaspersky is, (IMHO), arguably the best antivirus program around, it’s a good idea to run an online scan for a second opinion. If that’s clear I’ll send instructions for cleaning up what we’ve used.

Run ESET Online Scan

IMPORTANT Please make sure you uncheck the box next to Remove found threats. Eset will detect anything that looks even slightly suspicious, which could include legitimate program files. If you do not uncheck the box, Eset will automatically remove all suspicious files which could leave some of your software inoperable.

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.

ESET OnlineScan

  • click the Eset online Scanner button.
  • for alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

o    click on esetinstaller.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
o    double click on the Eset installer icon on your desktop.

  • check Yes, I accept the Terms of Use
  • click the Start button.
  • accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • check Scan archives and Remove found threats.
  • click Advanced settings and select the following:

    o    Scan potentially unwanted applications
o    Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    o    Enable Anti-Stealth technology

  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • when the scan completes, push List of found threats
  • push Export to Text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.

Note - if ESET doesn't find any threats, no report will be created.

  • push the back button.
  • push Finish

If a log has been produced post it in your next reply.

Thanks

Satchfan

Hi Satchfan

Should I disable only the Anti-Virus in KIS and leave the firewall active?

There are four AV components in KIS:

  File Anti-virus

  Mail Anti-virus

  Internet Anti-virus

  IM Anti-virus

Should they all be disabled?
