When a laptop gets to hot it shuts down to keep from melting the CPU and starting a fire. If you're using it on a soft surface such as a bed, pillow, soft blanket etc., they may be blocking the laptop vents on the bottom and sides. If you're using it on a hard surface and it still overheats, more than likely it needs a thorough cleaning.
