Thanks

See first post by P.A. Bear at http://www.techtalkz.com/windows-xp/482803-100000d1-bsod.html .

If system can boot into Windows:

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

List last 10 Event Viewer log

  List Installed Programs

List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link.

The result of following the directions provided...for Speccy...is a link to the snapshot of your system.  That's the link I refer to.

Thanks :).

Not sure what that is all about, ignore for now.

S.M.A.R.T Status:: warning

Considering the fact that you have a small drive that is older...I suggest that you download/install/run SeaTools For Windows and...run the long generic test.  Do not elect any of the other options.

Insufficient free space for Windows partition.  Percentage at 9%, should be minimum of around 15%.  Known to cause Windows issues.

You have the choice of using removeable media to store files...or an external hard drive...or removal of large files currently on the hard drive.  But something must be done.

I ran sea tools and everything checked out good.  I downloaded a driver for the SM Bus Controller, Cleaned the fan and made some space on the drive for the OS. Drfragged... So far so good, Thanks Louis for the links to some great little tools!

Happened again after playing .mkv videos with Media Player Classic. I've a Laptop cooling fan now too. Everything was pretty cool so it's not a heat issue. Horrid blue screen saying windows was shut down to prevent damage. I re booted and started playing the video again. I have it running to my CRT TV via a S video cable. Audio running to the 5.1 surround system. Oddly, I cannot get the sound to work right away and need unplug the cord to the sound out, after a few minutes, it will work. Perhaps a bad audio driver? I've run diagnostic tests, replaced a SM Bus Controller driver, defragged in safe mode, ran ComboFix, moved a load of files from both the primary and secondary drives. Everything except re install XP which I want to avoid for now. If any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Well...I've pointed out the problem areas, as I see them.

If you've addressed those properly and still have problems....there's something at work beyond my ability to suggest.  It doesn't seem to be a Windows problem.
