Please Help - Bad files/programs will not open when icons clicked

Hello,

 

First time poster. I hope I am posting in the right forum. 

 

I have had my Dell for about 3 years running Windows 7 and have never had a problem until recently. I have done some research into the problem and I think I have it diagnosed and what the solution might be, but I don't know how to go about doing this and I hope some kind soul can help walk me through it. Sorry if I got ahead of myself. Here is the situation:

 

About a month ago, I noticed that my computer was running very slow. When I would click on an icon for a browser or a program, the program would be very, very slow to load or would not load at all until I clicked it again. About a week after that, the programs stopped loading altogether.  This is where I am now. The computer starts up just fine, looks normal, but when I go to click on an icon for a program, nothing happens. I get a short hourglass, and then nothing.

 

I have done some research on this, and this is what I have found (if I am wrong, please feel free to step in) It seems this is caused by bad files due to turning the computer off via the on/off button.  I will need to re-install windows 7. I have no idea how to even begin to do this. I have alot of files, music, pictures etc. stored on the cpu and I am scared to lose them. I don't know what version of windows I have or anything like that, so I would greatly appreciate it if someone could just walk me through it and help me out. I thank you for your time and hope to hear from you.

Welll...first question that I have is....what did you find that convinced you that the only recourse is to reinstall Windows?  Such situationss do exist...but I'm curious as to how you determiend that your situaiton...falls into those few situations calling for a reinstall.

If you understand what backing up or copying files is...and practice it...there are few situaitons where one has to worry about losing data files.  Such can be stored on removeable media (CDs, DVDs, flash drives, etc.) or on media such as external hard drives....before even considering reinstalling Windows.

 

But...you have to help us to help you :).

 

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

 

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

  List last 10 Event Viewer log

  List Installed Programs

  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

 

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry to take so long in getting back to you. I have not had service the last few days and am only now getting settled back in.

 

You are absolutely correct about backing up files. I should take this to heart and get my arse in gear, and I always mean to do it, but after three years of owning this computer and tons of files, it seems like such a daunting task!

 

As far as why I think the solution is to reinstall windows (again, If I'm wrong and there is an easier solution, I'm all ears) I simply googled "windows 7 programs wont run when I click" or something like that. I saw other forums where people had similar experiences, and they were all told pretty much the same thing: corrupted files caused by improper shutdown, only solution is complete reinstall. Here's an example of one, but I found many more like this, so I just assumed this was the issue:

Of course, I'd be happy to be wrong here and go for something easier and quicker.

 

I have downloaded Mini toolbox and will get back to you soon with all that other stuff. I'm hoping to catch that computer during one of it's brief periods when stuff actually does work! Thanks again!

Well...it's your system and it's up to you to choose your own path.

 

Corrupted files...is a normal thing, with "corrupted" meaning "damaged".  It's the cause of the corrupted files...and the extent of such...that one should consider before plotting a course of action, IMO.

 

Corrupt files which belong to a program...the fix is simple, uninstall/reinstall.

 

Corrupt system files...try the sfc /scannow command and a repair install...before going to a clean install, in my world.

 

If the cause of the file corrupton stems from a problematical hard drive...then the drive will have to be replaced and Windows reinstalled.

 

If the cause of the corruption is malware...then one of the BC forusm for malware issues...may be of service.

 

If you simply want a "quick fix" and have the capability of easily doing a clean install of Windows...then it's a clean install chosen.

 

In any case...you need to run the appropriate hard drive diagnostic...before you decide to use that drive again, whether to attempt to repair or to attempt any type of clean install.  That diagnostic is available at the webs site of your hard drive manufacturer.

Okay, I can no longer run or do anything in regular mode on the computer, especially when connected to the internet.  We did not have a connection for several weeks and I was able to access files and run various programs.  Now I cannot access the files, even when I disconnect.

 

In safe mode, however, everything is accessible.  I had to run MiniToolBox in safe mode, so hopefully that is enough.  I downloaded Speccy on a flash drive and installed it on the computer, but could not run it.  I got this error message: CPU dll init failed (error 2) .  Then it crashed, even in safe mode with networking.
