Specific issues - help me please

Morning,

 

I'm having problems with my Hewlett Packard Pavilion G series laptop on Windows 7.

 

I'm not expert in computers but can normally get by with some instructions so would appreciate any help and guidance people can offer me on here.

 

To start the story I noticed a couple of weeks ago that I was having two specific problems.

 

1. The first program I open on the computer freezes after a couple of minutes and can't be closed, even with a task manager end process attempt. However, if I open up another program that will work fine. The frozen programs stays frozen for the duration though.

 

2. When I go to shutdown the computer it freezes on the shut down screen so the only way to close is to hold the power button down for a few seconds.

 

Further to the above problems, which persist, I have now identified another issue.

 

I have security settings on my computer and have McAfee Antivirus Plus. Now although it says everything is fine it has the next scheduled scan down as 16/07/13! Nearly two weeks ago. Then when I try to run a scan it says it can't. It's as if the program has been frozen in time.

 

I also have a problem with my Windows Security Center, whereby when I go in to it it states Windows Security Center can't be started.

 

I've tried a system restore but that freezes as well.

 

Then today a new problem has arisen.

 

When I'm on my laptop I might leave it for a few minutes to get a drink etc. When I come back the screen has gone black in to hibernation and a flick of the mouse will start the screen up again. As of today, once the screen goes in to hibernation it won't come back up again no matter how much I move the mouse or use the keyboard.

 

I'm no computer expert but it looks like some sort of virus to me so I'm eager to solve the problem asap.

 

I'm currently using the laptop in safe mode - which interestingly isn't causing programs to freeze and is allowing me to shutdown normally. However, I'm still not able to scan or access the security center.

 

Any help would be fantastic.

Let's see if this is malware related:

 

:step1: Install and run MBAM

:step2:  Running TDSSKiller to obtain log

 

Note: Don't cure or delete a threat, but choose skip for all instead.

  • Please download TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters

  • In the Additional options: Check Detect TDLFS file system
  • Click Start Scan and allow the scan process to run

  • Choose for all threats to Skip for all of them.
  • Click Continue
  • Please post the TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt found in your root directory (typically c:\)

  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and » UNCHECK "Remove found threats" <== Important
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Copy and paste the information in your next reply. (If no malware was found you will not be presented with a log).

.Download SecurityCheck.exe from Here

. Run SecurityCheck and follow the instruction from inside the code box.
. When the scan is finished, a notepad will automatically open as check.txt
   Please copy and paste the contents here on your next reply.

Download MiniToolBox and run the program. Select
List Last 10 Event Viewers, List Installed Programs and List Users, Partitions and Memory Size then click Go.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

Please post the Minitoolbox also next time. Try completely removing your McAfee protection software and see if the problem persist, see here.

The problem points to McAfee as the culprit.

Try completely removing your McAfee protection software and see if the problem persist, see here.

Evening,

 

it appears to be running fine.

 

The laptop is shutting down without freezing and no other programs have frozen yet. So hopefully that's it sorted.

 

Thanks for you expertise and guidance. It's odd that McAfee has suddenly caused this problem because I've always used it and never would have thought that could cause such a problem.

Some McAfee updates might have cause these unwanted effects. MSE would be fine but if you are keen on using your paid version, it is your choice to reinstall and see if the problem persist of not. Just make sure to use only one AV at a time.
