My guess is it's a virus. Appears to have disabled MSE, tells me "due to an unidentified problem, windows cannot display windows firewall settings" when trying to turn on Windows Firewall. MSE does not appear in the add/remove programs list and will not allow deletion any other way. When trying to browse, it sends me to other bogus sites at random. When trying to reinstall MSE gives me the error: 0x80070643. Windows XP Home SP3

It looks like malware (rootkit)... Gives this a try:

:step1: Install and run MBAM

:step2:  Running TDSSKiller to obtain log

Note: Don't cure or delete a threat, but choose skip for all instead.

  • Please download TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters

  • In the Additional options: Check Detect TDLFS file system
  • Click Start Scan and allow the scan process to run

  • Choose for all threats to Skip for all of them.
  • Click Continue
  • Please post the TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt found in your root directory (typically c:\)
