Hi there. Just recently I have updated my Avast and since then I receive pop ups saying that a malicious URL has been blocked, and the process is svchost.exe.

In firefox if I was to click a link on a website I would get a new tab with some kind of spam popup.

Google chrome wouldn't even let me do a Google search as 'the server has been revoked' or something like that.

I ran a few scans and got rid of some things. I then ran Superantispyware and removed some more threats but still, I kept receiving this message from Avast.

I downloaded Webroot Secureanywhere and removed Avast as I've had trouble previously running 2 anti-virus programs before. I ran a scan and everything was fine, no threats found.

Now last night and today I boot my computer up, I still receive the pop ups in Firefox and the same security revoked in Chrome. But also, my computer will boot up for around 10 mins, and then freeze, and I have to hold the power button down to turn the computer off. I can not use my keyboard or mouse.

This does not happen in safe mode, only in a normal state.

I am not quite sure if this is the right board to post in and I'm sorry if it's wrong as i do not have any logs to post, I just don't know where to go from here as I only have about 5 mins per boot to actually do something.

I hope someone can help.

Thanks in advance, Dyl.

EDIT: I was able to quickly run DDS before the freeze and here are the log results.

Here is the DDS.txt content:

Hello dyl

I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.

Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with one of these just skip it and move on to the next one.

-AdwCleaner-

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
-Junkware-Removal-Tool-

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
When they are complete let me have the two reports and let me know how things are running.

I was able to run JRT but it hasn't been able to complete before my computer freezes. It reaches the 'Checking shortcuts' stage of the process and then freezes. This time the computer didn't totally freeze, my keyboard does not respond and the mouse is very laggy and cannot click into anything.

Hope the above log sheds some light on the situation. I will keep trying to run JRT and will update this post with an edit if I have success.

Appreciating all of your time and help, Dyl.

Hello dyl,

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi there Gringo. Thanks for your quick reply.

I have downloaded and run ComboFix. Before running ComboFix I exit and stop protection from my Antivirus, yet when I run ComboFix it still prompts me to turn off my antivirus. I continued, it downloaded whatever it needed to from Microsoft, and then my computer froze.

Do you know why my computer is freezing? It's starting to really frustrate me, especially because the help you're giving me isn't getting it's full use.

Is there any processes or fixes I can run that are quick? I'm talking under 5 minutes quick.

Thanks, Dyl

EDIT: I have rebooted my computer and ran combofix again. I have been prompted that I have a ZeroAccess Rootkit and that it's a particularly hard one to remove. I tried to print screen this prompt for you but then I was prompted with another window saying 'Combofix has detected rootkit activity, your system needs to be rebooted' or something of the like.

Hope this helps in some way. Dyl.

SECOND EDIT: ComboFix rebooted my computer and then popped up immediately at start up. Not even explorer started. My computer hasn't frozen and it's been 2 hours. It says it's scanning or something and has completed stage 48. It has been completing these stages for the 2 hours now. It's been stuck on stage 48 for around an hour now.

My antivirus keeps popping up asking me if I would like to allow the registry changes combofix is doing, I have been accepting them. I guess my antivirus is running and possibly interfering with combofix but I can't do anything about it as i don't have explorer running still. I received a prompt from explorer saying ____.3xe or something like that has encountered a problem and needs to close, but ComboFix has still completed around 20 stages since then. Not sure if that has anything to do with it sticking at stage 48.

I will sleep on it and leave it going overnight but I hope this additional information I have provided will shed some light on things.

thanks. Dyl.

Hello dyl

Go ahead and stop it and then I would like you to try and run these next.

TDSSKiller

Please download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.
  • Put a checkmark beside loaded modules.
  • A reboot will be needed to apply the changes. Do it.
  • TDSSKiller will launch automatically after the reboot. Also your computer may seem very slow and unusable. This is normal. Give it enough time to load your background programs.
  • Then click on Change parameters in TDSSKiller.
  • Check all boxes then click OK.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • more than one report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". The one that I need is the larger one. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Note** this report can be very long - so if the website gives you an error saying it is to long you may attache it

If the forum still complains about it being to long send me everything that is at the end of the report after where it says

    ==================

Hi there Gringo.

I woke up to my computer frozen again at the ComboFix stage where it was creating a log report. Annoying cause it was so close. But it was booted up properly, must've rebooted while I was sleeping after the 40-something stages.

Now I have an Internet Explorer icon on my desktop that I didn't have before... Is this normal? It's not a shortcut either. It just looks like an .exe is on my desktop.

I ran TDDSKiller, it found 4 suspicious threats.

Here is the report:

12:37:03.0484 1736  Scan finished
12:37:03.0484 1736  ============================================================
12:37:03.0515 3224  Detected object count: 4
12:37:03.0515 3224  Actual detected object count: 4
12:37:12.0078 3224  !SASCORE ( UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic ) - skipped by user
12:37:12.0078 3224  !SASCORE ( UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic ) - User select action: Skip
12:37:12.0078 3224  cercsr6 ( UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic ) - skipped by user
12:37:12.0078 3224  cercsr6 ( UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic ) - User select action: Skip
12:37:12.0078 3224  MDM ( UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic ) - skipped by user
12:37:12.0078 3224  MDM ( UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic ) - User select action: Skip
12:37:12.0093 3224  sptd ( LockedFile.Multi.Generic ) - skipped by user
12:37:12.0093 3224  sptd ( LockedFile.Multi.Generic ) - User select action: Skip
12:37:15.0812 0304  Deinitialize success

I then ran RougeKiller, and it alerted that I have a ZeroAccess with a warning sign flashing. I hit delete and it opened up an internet explorer window, and then my computer froze. I will try to run it again as something popped up (Might have deleted the things) but I couldn't see because the IE window opened.

It turns out RogueKiller finished deleting last time, and created 2 reports. 'RKreport[0]_S_' & 'RKreport[0]_D_'

This report is titled 'RKreport[0]_D_'. At this boot-up I now have a 'My Computer' icon on my desktop I didn't have before.

After copying these to a USB my computer froze once again. I rebooted, ran RK again as I wasn't sure if it completed last time, but this time the scan finished and didn't find anything. It created more reports if you would like to see any of those, please ask.

After the computer idling for a small time it froze again. I guess the thing's still on here.

Thanks, Dylan

Hello Dylan

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Hello Dyl

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Hi there Gringo

I ran ComboFix in Safe mode and it ran fine. Only took about 15 minutes. My computer didn't reboot either; My desktop disappeared for a second and then It just came up with the prompt saying that Windows is still in safe mode and if I want to continue to click 'yes'.

The following is the log produced.

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realize. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing. These logs are looking allot better. But we still have some work to do.

uninstall some programs

NOTE** Because of the cleanup process some of the programs I have listed may not be in add/remove anymore this is fine just move to the next item on the list.

You can remove these programs using add/remove or you can use the free uninstaller from Revo (it does allot better of a job
  • Programs to remove

    • Adobe Reader 9.4.5
      µTorrent
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
      Java 7 Update 9
      Java™ 6 Update 37

  • Please download and install Revo Uninstaller Free
  • Double click Revo Uninstaller to run it.
  • From the list of programs double click on The Program to remove
  • When prompted if you want to uninstall click Yes.
  • Be sure the Moderate option is selected then click Next.
  • The program will run, If prompted again click Yes
  • when the built-in uninstaller is finished click on Next.
  • Once the program has searched for leftovers click Next.
  • Check/tick the bolded items only on the list then click Delete
  • when prompted click on Yes and then on next.
  • put a check on any folders that are found and select delete
  • when prompted select yes then on next
  • Once done click Finish.
.

Update Adobe reader
  • Recently there have been vulnerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.
    • If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be careful not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Install Java:

Please go here to install Java
  • click on the Free Java Download Button
  • click on Agree and start Free download
  • click on Run
  • click on run again
  • click on install
  • when install is complete click on close
Clean Out Temp Files
  • This small application you may want to keep and use once a week to keep the computer clean.

    Download CCleaner from here CCleaner
    • Run the installer to install the application.
    • When it gives you the option to install Yahoo toolbar uncheck the box next to it.
    • Run CCleaner. (make sure under Windows tab all the boxes of Internet Explorer and Windows explorer are checked. Under System check Empty Recycle Bin and Temporary Files. Under Application tab all the boxes should be checked).
    • Click Run Cleaner.
    • Close CCleaner.
: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

I see you have MBAM installed - I think this is a great program and would like you to run a quick scan at this time
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidentally close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hi there Gringo

Can I do all of this in Safe Mode? Or should I try to do as much as I can in normal boot?

Thanks, Dyl

EDIT: I have run Revo in safe mode, I get a prompt saying the windows uninstaller cannot be accessed because I am in safe mode, I click okay and then it says it was uninstalled successfully, does that mean it has still worked?

SECOND EDIT: I removed all the programs you listed. Upon rebooting in normal mode, everything seemed to run fine. I opened chrome and it did not show the 'revoked' page. In objectdock, I clicked my Firefox dock entry and it opened Internet Explorer which I thought was strange so I quickly exited it.

I downloaded the two installers listed (Adobe & Java), and then the computer froze again.

I will run the computer in Safe Mode with Networking, install the two programs and then run the other scans and post logs.

THIRD EDIT: Upon booting in Safe Mode with Networking, I clicked to open the Java Installer. It downloaded fine, and then I receive a prompt saying 'The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation'. Any idea why? Is it because you can't add/remove programs in safe mode?

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded start-up entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.
  • Run HijackThis (rightclick and run as admin)
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTSVolFE.exe] "C:\Program Files\Creative\Mixer\CTSVolFE.exe" /r
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PMX Daemon] ICO.EXE
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SigmatelSysTrayApp] stsystra.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\NeroCheck.exe
