Internet Connectivity with Respect to Network Location

I've noticed on two laptops I've worked with that I had a limited Internet connection until I chose a network location (Work). I was curious to know if this was just a coincidence and it fixed itself in the background or if choosing a network location played a role in gaining full Internet connection. Thoughts?
