Hi.  Could someone please help be with my system restore.  It will not allow me to use it even though it is still making restore points.  If I try to restore (I am having trouble loading some games that use Adobe Flash and tried to restore system), it goes through all of the usual things, reboots and then tells me it could not restore and nothing has changed on my computer.  This has been happening for a long time now.  System restore is not disabled.  Hopefully I will be able to get back here to see if anyone can help me.  Thanks.  (First time user)

Hello and Welcome -

Download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE
* Save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: If a security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Thank You -

Have you tried in safemode ? You might try disabling antivirus as sometimes these will interfere. Also possibly your system restore points have become corrupt.

1 - Turn off System restore, this will wipe out all previous restore points.
2 - Restart your system.
3 - Turn system restore back on.
Then you can set a new Restore point.
If anyone with more expertise has another solution, hopefully they will jump in. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Regards............

Edit: noknojon we seem to have posted simultaneously. vtl3689 I defer to noknojon.

Thank you sikntired.  I have not tried that, but will keep it in mind.  Noknojon, Although I was able to download Security Check, it did not give me a chance to save it to my desktop.  But the black box did open and do its thing.  These are the results.  Thank you both for trying to help me.  My computer was slow (I have 1 teribyte of hd), and not loading and it was suggested that I update Java to 25, this I did, it did not fix the problem and still could not system restore.  A friend suggested you all.  You are a blessing to me.

@ sikntired - No problem as Security Check shows nothing important -

Please download MiniToolBox, Save it to your desktop and run it.
Close any Firefox browsers you may have open
Checkmark the following boxes:
•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files

Click Go and copy / paste the result (Result.txt).

List your computer Make and Model if known

Please post a snapshot with Speccy for more system details -

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/2Ian3JKz8fhT6A4HUnXJNZu.  Hope this is what you need.  As for the computer, I had this built in 2002 and here are the specs as I know them.  Windows XP 2002 version SP3; Intel Celeron CPU E1600 @ 2.40GHz (I think there are two of these); 2.40GHz, 2.00GB of Ram; Motherboard is AsusTekComputer P5G41c-M; Graphics = Asus VS238 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS; Hard Drive = Western Digital WDC WD10012FALS-00Y6A0 (Sata) 1TB.  If you need anything else I will try to find it (of course, I may need some help doing that.  Sorry to be such a dunce with this)

Thanks for your help and blessings to you.

You might try disabling antivirus as sometimes these will interfere....

'Bleieve 'es on the right path. Give it a whirl. Seen it and that is the exact reason I abandoned AM/AV progs and went to images: Or VMs

Hi bludgard, I am not sure what AM/AV progs are and how to go to images or VMs (do not know what this is).  Thanks for your help.

I was just seconding the suggestion that disabling the installed antivirus may give access to System Restore feature. Sometimes uninstalling the program completely may be required. I find that Microsoft Security Essentials plays well with System Restore.

AV/AM = Anti-virus / anti-malware

VM = Virtual Machine; an operating system running within an operating system that is disposable and/or recreated at will. Other than sharing hard-ware, host OS is not effected by the "virtual" OS.

Images = System/Disk image (snapshot) of a hard drive in a healthy state (optimally) that can be used to restore the drive in case of corruption or failure. It is the responsability of user to create the image before corruption/failure.

Sorry, sometimes I post after a long day and can be curt at times.

Thanks

No problem bludgard, I quite understand.  I appreciate any and all help and am not afraid to say I do not know something.  While you all are trying to fix the system restore problem, I am trying to get rid of search.conduit.com.  It was downloaded somehow with some other things that I did not ask for (actually I think it came from a fake Adoble Flash Update).  I have deleted from the control panel, done a search and deleted all I could find, gone into Chrome and deleted it (but it comes back).  My poor computer is hurting and I really want to fix it.  It is slowwwwwww, which is frustrating to say the least.  I have 1 TB of HD and only about 250 mb used with 2 gb of ram, it should go faster than backwards.  I am always cleaning out the used and temp files with AFT cleaner.  So that has been my project, while trying to get system restore fixed.  I know there is a lot to do with this computer because I know I will need to get into the start up processes and get rid of the ones I really do not need, but that I am very leery of doing as I do not know what most of the stuff means.  Time will fix it all.  Thanks for your help.

For the search.conduit.com problem, try this -

How To Temporarily Disable Your (AVG) Anti-virus to avoid conflicts with this program

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

*Close all open programs and internet browsers.
*Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
*Click on Delete.
*Confirm each time with Ok.
* NOTE :Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.

*Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
*You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Follow it with this Temp / Junk file cleamer

Please download TFC, or Temp File Cleaner by Old Timer
Usage Instructions:

  • Download TFC from the download link above and save the file on your desktop.
  • Close ALL running applications as TFC will terminate them before attempting to clean up the temporary files.
  • Double-click on the TFC icon.
  • When the program opens, click on the Start button.  TFC will terminate the Explorer process and all running applications and then begin the process of cleaning out all of your temp folders.
  • When done, press OK to reboot your computer and finish the cleanup.

Note: Depending on how much data is currently stored in the Temp folders, this process can take quite a while to remove all of the files, so please be patient.

Thanks -

Yes, When I open Chrome I no longer get search.conduit.com.  Now it goes to Chrome but says "Your preferences cannot be read. Some features may be unavailable and changes to preferences won't be saved". And it asks if I want to set Google as default, to which I say yes.  But at least conduit is gone.  YEA!!!!  I just came home and realized we had a power outage and TFC did not get to complete.  I will be running it again in a few minutes and will post anything.

Thank you so very much for all of your help.  I am hoping all of this (with conduit gone, etc.) it will speed up my computer.  But as the saying goes, one step at a time.
