I followed all the directions in the tutorial to change the name of the Administrator, but when I open computer management, the list is not there, It goes from Shared Folders to Scheduled Tasks.  I cannot locate the "Local Users" anywhere.

Please help.

thanks,

Good morning Poweroo.

A couple of quick questions:

Which tutorial were you following?

And, what is your Operating System?

I'm pretty sure that Local Users and Groups are not available in Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, and Home Premium.

Just wanted to make mention of that in case that is the OS that you are working with.

Well hello,

I am using Windows 8.

I was following the tutorial on changing the administrator name.

I got to the computer management list and Local Users does not exist.

When I get home, I will send screen shot or snip of what I see.

Do you know if it's Windows 8 Pro or Windows 8 Core or RT?

Core and RT do not appear to support the snap in for "Local Users".

Can you try running LUSRMGR.MSC in the RUN dialogue box (should be Windows key + R) and see what message gets displayed?

see attached message window.

Wll nevermind.  I can't find where to attache a file.  I saw it earlier.

Sorry.

It has a big Red X and says, "This snapin may not be used with this edition of Windows 8.  To manage user

accounts for this computer, use the User Accounts tool in the Control Panel."

that's it.

Yeah, that's the message I thought you were going to get.

Here are a couple of links that show what I was trying to convey - this one (look at the third response) and this one.

I'm compelled to ask - are you sure you're running the Pro version?

If you are sure, this might be a Microsoft issue or something that went wrong with the install.

Hey there Poweroo, I was fussing around with Windows 8 this morning in a virtual machine and was able to reproduce the Red X and the error message when trying to use that snap in.

If you wouldn't mind, which tutorial were you using when you came across your initial problem?

Perhaps we can find out some more information there by revisiting it.

Hey there Poweroo, sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

The time consuming combo of work & school.

Thanks for sending the link - I think I found the problem.

The written instructions that you appear to be following are for Method 1and won't work on Windows 8.

I did make note of the first step, esp. the part where it says, "In Windows 8, from the Start Screen type..." but I think that may be a typo on the writer's part and am going to let the Site Admins know that that probably needs to be corrected.

Would you mind scrolling all the way down and trying Method 4?

I'm willing to bet a nice wireless mouse that that Method will get you what you're looking for.

Gotta run (I'm at work) but will check in laters.

Oh Poweroo, nice avatar.

Did you ever get this issue fixed/resolved?

If so, inquiring minds (and the any other Members who might be having the same problem) would love to know.
