I accidentally posted in the Windows 7 forum, so I am re-posting in the correct location.  Thanks in advance for your help.

I found this site when searching for a cure to a white screen issues in Windows 7 x64.  I downloaded and ran the FRST64.exe based on your advice to someone in a similar situation.  The log is below.  The F: drive is the USB drive I used to run frst64.exe.

The computer is my music recording computer built by PC Audiolabs, and while I use Microsoft Security Essentials, I leave the computer disconnected from the internet unless I am downloading software/updates or digging around the internet for something.  As a result, I do not always get the Windows updates immediately, and it seems that I have had a "restart Windows" to apply updates prompt every time I use the computer in the last 2 days (so I am wondering if there are new updates or if the updates didn't work).  That is just by way of background.

Your help is appreciated.

Here is the frst.txt

Hello scott2112

I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.

Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

Open notepad. Please copy the contents of the code box below. To do this highlight the contents of the box and right click on it. Paste this into the open notepad. Save it on the flash drive as fixlist.txt

HKU\PCAudioLabs User\...\Winlogon: [Shell] explorer.exe,C:\Users\PCAudioLabs User\AppData\Roaming\cache.dat <==== ATTENTION
C:\Users\PCAudioLabs User\AppData\Roaming\cache.dat
C:\Users\PCAudioLabs User\AppData\Roaming\cache.ini
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

On Vista or Windows 7: Now please enter System Recovery Options.

Run FRST again like we did before but this time press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flash drive (Fixlog.txt) please post it to your reply.

Also boot the computer into normal mode and let me know how things are looking.

Gringo... thank you VERY much.  Below is the fixlog.  The computer booted in normal mode fine.  I have done nothing other than boot, but it appears to be up and running.  I note that the bar at the bottom is slightly different in that my quick start menu options are gone and the bar in the bottom right corner does not contain the same links (soundcard and add/remove hardware are there, but not the longer list of items that used to be there).  That is the only change I see.

Should I update my Microsoft Security Definitions and scan now?  Check for Windows updates first?  The computer is not currently connected to the internet (typing this from the family computer).

Much appreciated, and I will await instruction before doing anything else!

A quick update I am wrong, the soundcard was not in the lower right-hand dock, and in just trying to play music, the soundcard was not detected. Do I have to update or reinstalled drivers?

Sorry, one last update In the hardware section, the soundcard shows up and indicates the drivers are properly installed and up-to-date. However, under the "sounds", no soundcards are showing up as devices and it won't let me... "No audio devices are installed"

I do not run the auto backup. It is my audio computer so anything that might run on its own at anytime is disabled. I have a c: drive image from February. I was going to do it again recently but didn't get to it. Dumb. I back up my audio drive regularly but haven't created an image of the operating drive for a while, obviously.

Question for you... Will restoring using a operating drive image be an effective way to restore? I will have to update a bunch of software but that is no big deal.

I am 99.9% sure that the issue started 7/19. Should I remove any other files too? Like any of these?

Sorry if that's a stupid question, but none of those appear to be the type of things that I run. I don't have the Google taskbar, although I may but I don't want it and it may have downloaded itself. I just wasn't sure because some of that stuff looks unfamiliar And out of place given my stripped-down system.

Thanks again. I WILL be donating!!

Correction… Obviously the windows update items look familiar. It's more the entries with $'s and the Google stuff That I was questioning.

Hello scott2112

The google stuff can be removed but the other stuff is related to windows

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I ran combofix.  The log is below.  The computer is about the same... no soundcard, no LAN, etc.  I tried troubleshooting the soundcard and none of the ones installed (the one that comes with the motherboard or my PCIe card - RME HDSP9652 - show up.  No LAN, and that is also a PCIe port, I think, although I could be wrong.  Tried troubleshooting that as well, but no luck.  Thankfully I have another Windows computer and have been bouncing back and forth with my portable hard drive.

Here is the log... any help you can give would be appreciated.  Thanks again, and in advance.

Hello Scott

I have been think,

With the things that are still not working and combofix not really finding anything - I think time wise it would be allot faster if you do use the "restoring using a operating drive image be an effective way to restore?"

I understand, and agree. I have never performed a restore from an image disc. Can I ask one last favor? I have the image on my backup drive, and it's under a folder called backup. Will I just point to restore to the folder, or are their particular files or file extensions I should look for? If you could give me an idea of the type of file that I need to point the restore to, or if you can tell me if it is the full folder, that would be a great help. Believe me, I appreciate all the help to get the computer "unfrozen" and able to be restored.
