I think my friend's laptop is infected with malware.  I ran Malware Anti and it found a few items and removed them, but I still can't get online or uninstall various apps.

Hello Mikey, I moved this from Vista to the Am I Infected forum.

For the connection try these...
Please click Start > Run, type inetcpl.cpl in the runbox and press enter.
Click the Connections tab and click the LAN settings option.
Verify if "Use a proxy..." is checked, if so, UNcheck it and click OK/OK to exit.
Now check if the internet is working again.
OR
Go to Start ... Run and type in cmd
A dos Window will appear.
Type in the dos window: netsh winsock reset
Click on the enter key.
Reboot your system to complete the process.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Please Download TDSSkiller
Launch it.
Click on change parameters-Select TDLFS file system
Click on "Scan".
Please post the LOG report(log file should be in your C drive)
Do not change the default options on scan results.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Delete.
Confirm each time with Ok.
You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Last run ESET.
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
  • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
  • Scan potentially unwanted applications
  • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
  • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.
  • NOTE:Sometimes if ESET finds no infections it will not create a log.

I was unable to run the ESET scan using IE or Firefox, even in safemode.  I got an error saying cannot get updates and asks if I'm using a proxy, which I'm not.

Try this...

Please click Start > Run, type inetcpl.cpl in the runbox and press enter.
Click the Connections tab and click the LAN settings option.
Verify if "Use a proxy..." is checked, if so, UNcheck it and click OK/OK to exit.
Now try again.

That's weird...even though no proxy settings were checked, it finally started scanning.  It looks like it could take a while.

Good Java is Removed.

Empty your temp folders using TFC (Temporary File Cleaner)
  • Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
    alternate download link
  • Save any unsaved work. (TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!)
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. (If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose "Run As Administrator".)
  • Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway allowing Windows to load normally (not into Safe Mode) to ensure a complete clean.
You have tried.....
Windows Vista / 7
1.Click Start and select Control Panel.
2.Double-click Programs and Features.
3.Select McAfee Security Scan Plus.
4.Click Uninstall and follow the steps provided.

OR

There are two ways to remove McAfee Security Scan Plus:

You can also uninstall through the McAfee Security Scan Plus folder:
1.Under Start menu, go to all Programs
2.Open McAfee Security Scan Plus folder
3.Select “Uninstall”

OR

Use this AppRemover utility

Global Moderator:    Same IP Address?

Under "MiniToolbox,"  please note:    add address name= "Local Area Connection" 192.168.0.1.

Older version of JAVA?   Any chance it's Java Version 6, Update 25?   And, has the member ever tried to uninstall Windows Live Mesh, Windows Media Player/Center, Skype, Messenger or any other programs but somehow they always return?

My PC shows that same IP address and I've seen it on other posts here in bleeping as well as on some kind of forum for cable internet issues (I can re-locate it, if needed.)  I'm not a geek so if it is normal/okay for more than one person to have the same IP address, please ignore this.

I posted/someone is assisting me on my issues; please feel free to read that post.  Key points for you -- I don't believe my PC (actually my 3 PCs/one tablet) are infected by malware but they probably once were.  HOWEVER, I do believe my PCs are being accessed by a Remote Desktop which is running Windows_NT under my Windows7 Home Premium x64.  This is my home PC and I've never been connected to a network.  I've found references to virtual disks, network processes/events and events which said things like "Firewall stopped" then "Firewall started" as well as "Time Stopped/Started"  Special Logons by users with "Special Privileges" and I've opened up files that seem to be "batch" files with words like "Upload install package"  SUPPRESS, REALLY SUPPRESS + more.  When copying "User Profiles" to a DVD, file names that appeared to belong to music and video files were copied but I don't download those and, in fact, recently, reformatted/re-installed Windows 7.  Also, although it appears that I'm running x64 Win7, my x64 Windows updates failed, Mr. Fixit won't work and I can't turn on Windows Defender.  Again, not a geek but I'm also not as new to bleeping as my profile indicates.  I apologize for posting under this topic, but I don't understand why there are multiple  "192.168.01" (or .03) and thought I should let you now that -- if it's possible, I think someone installed Windows_NT and it's been running "underneath" my Windows 7 and allows others to illegally download music and video files.

I would love to know how many times "192.168.01" appears on bleeping.  I don't think this is a isolated issue.  And, although not a geek, I've learned a lot about other things on my PC, I've made copies of files, taken notes/screenshots and would be delighted to share them with bleeping.  Again, I truly apologize for jumping on like this but . . .  ??

The IP address 192.168.0.1 is the default for certain home broadband routers, not your personal IP. See http://compnetworking.about.com/od/routers/g/192_168_0_1_def.htm

Java is uninstalled already.

Ok yes look a bit further,

thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
And a rootkit scan.

Please download aswMBR ( 4.5MB ) to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon, and click Run.
  • When asked if you'd like to "download the latest Avast! virus definitions", click Yes.
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan.
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop, then copy and paste it in your next reply.
