Hi, I was wondering if someone had some thoughts on this:

I am running a Dell XPS15 with Windows 7. Recently, windows has begun to freeze after 10 or 15 minutes of use leaving only the cursor moving. I have to force shutdown the computer when this happens. I ran an AVAST boot time scan with no negative results. I did a crashdump analysis and it indicated the problem involved fileinfo.sys. I then tried to do a pre-boot memory scan. The program made it about an hour in and then the computer just shut off making it difficult to read the results. I'm stuck. Thanks in advance for any help.

How long is "recently"...a day, a week, a month...?

System loss of power...brings only two things to my thoughts...PSU and/or overheating.

Recently means the last two weeks. Is there any way to check if your theories are right. Thanks for the help by the way.

We can try to check some system data :).

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

List last 10 Event Viewer log

  List Installed Programs

List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link.

I don't have much experience with Intel CPUs...but it looks to me as if your CPU is approaching the max temperature and may get too close at times, causing your shutdownls.  82 Celsius is not what I would expect and the max operating temp is listed as 100 Celsius.

Someone familiar with Dell laptops and Intel CPUs...will have to provide more useful info on that.

There's also a utility that I suggest running, Intel Processor Diagnostic Test.  I'm not familiar with it but it may give you a better idea re the possibility of CPU overheating or other problems.

In fact...since this is a Dell system, I suggest running the online diagnostics at http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/555/KCS/KcsArticles/ArticleView?docid=266616 .

I see no signs of problems with the hard drive.

IE7 Pro...see Wiki Link. .  I don't believe in installing unsupported apps with dubious utility with possible browser compatibility issues..

You seem to have/had problems with system restore, Ad-Aware drivers, and Kaspersky.  Could be coincidence...could be a malware flag.

Concur that the CPU is too warm. You could try using some canned air to blow out the air ducts for the CPU. If that doesn't work, you're into more serious hardware issues. Is your system under warranty, nysports? If it is, I'd contact Dell. Otherwise, I think you are looking at removing the cooler and replacing the thermal interface material, if not the cooler itself. Dell has OK service manuals online, and you don't need a bunch of tools to do this, but you might want to send it to a shop. Mistakes doing a DIY repair on a laptop are potentially very expensive. Depends on your level of confidence and general mechanical ability.

Hey guys, thanks again for all the insight. Since last time I've checked each memory stick individually and completely uninstalled ad-aware. No help. I also cleaned the insides with air as best I could. No help. Unfortunately it is not under warranty. I'm thinking the heat is the problem. One question though -- sometimes it tends to freeze up even when it's not that warm to the touch (and the fans aren't blowing). Any thoughts on this.  I pasted my latest mini tool box report below BTW

Have You run the Built-in Dell Diagnostics?

Turn on the Dell, When the Dell Logo appears start hitting F12, Choose Diagnostics. Run the entire set or at least Hard Drive, memory and motherboard. You can skip the Optical Disk drive test.

Good Luck

Done. It completed without any errors. However, the problem unfortunately persists.

Disable Kapersky and try Restore....

Look in Task Manager to define what is drivivg up the temps. What is running the CPU so high?

As it appears that the system starts it's crashing rutine on trying to load Lavasoft Ad-Aware drivers:

"Error: (08/03/2013 01:19:02 PM) (Source: Service Control Manager) (User: )

Description: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
Lbd"
I would do a search on driver(s) names and registry entries installed with Ad-Aware and delete them after backing up the regisry.
As I have never run the software I would not know the entries.
I will see if I can find the entries after installing on VM and report back; may take a couple days....

Edit: Give me a couple of hours; what version were you running?

Version of AdAware?  I'm not sure. I re installed it and then uninstalled it. As to your other question, I've monitored my tasks and find nothing unusual. I also cleaned the heat sync and fan, and applied new thermal paste.

I've added additional fans under the laptop with the same results. Does this eliminate the overheating theory?

Take another snapshot, using Speccy, but don't post the link this time.

Just tell us the temps reflected for your motherboard and CPU (near the beginning of the snapshot).

From 20 Jul 2013 Speccy:

CPU     Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo @ 2.20GHz:     82 °C     Merom 65nm Technology
Motherboard        Dell Inc.:       82 °C
