Toshiba Satellite - model # = PSLD8E-09D008EN

Windows Vista Home Premium

Service pack 2

Memory (Ram) 2.00GB

System: 32-bit operating system

Processor: Genuine Intel® CPU T1600 @ 1.66GHz 1.66 GHz

(I just copied the above off the laptop I have no idea what it means and or what checks to do to find the problem)

ISSUE:

I had this problem a few days ago with my laptop:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/500749/toshiba-laptop-wont-boot-up/

It seemed to finally install the updates and was fine (albeit a little slow at booting up I thought)

Then it started freezing when I was online now and then, today it's been freezing since I turned it on and I'm having to

type this on my other laptop.

It freezes no matter what I'm doing: online (any browser) or just now I was looking in pictures but doing nothing and it's froze again????? Task manager won't even come on it just does nothing at all.

I tried to run a disk check before but it just came up with volume is clean and didn't even run the disk check this time - though it did the other day.

It will boot up in safe mode. The laptop doesn't feel any warmer than usual.

Any help would be really great as I don't know what I should be doing or what the problem is. Thank you.

Hi

We need to collect some basic info to analyze and find the reason behind the freezes. So please follow the below steps.

:step1:  Boot the system in to safe mode and check whether it works fine.

:step2:  Generate a report about your system using Speccy by reading the guide below (normal mode )

Post the web link displayed by Speccy in next reply.

:step3:  Download and run Minitoolbox from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.

-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size

Now click "Go" and post the output in next reply

:step4: Use Speccy to monitor the temperature at regular intervals. Report if you can see any abnormal increase in the temperature.

The laptop will boot into safe mode and seems fine but then again when I boot it up normal it can be fine for a bit as well, this morning I was using it for a good few hours before it froze on me.

speccysnapshot_zps71899658.jpg

>> Where it says CPU since I've been watching it I've seen the temperature number and it's not been lower than above 58 since I've been watching it but it has been has high as 70 and now I can hear the fan going and it's hovering at 64 if that means anything. The hard drive temp doesn't really change as much as the CPU one it was 46 and now it's 50/51 and the CPU temp as gone back down to 61.

This is what the temperatures are at the time of posting this message apart from the CPU has gone down to 66 now.

I've always got my laptop on a table and have tilted it up further to let the fan underneath have more air. It's froze a few times on me today.

Hi

Your CPU temperature is definitely high and that might be the reason for freezing. Disassembling the system, cleaning all dusts, properly re-applying thermal paste etc are necessary to fix the heat issue. There is also chance that the CPU cooling fa might be faulty.

Disassembling and cleaning the laptop requires fair knowledge in computer hardware and previous disassembling experience. I suggest hiring the help of a friend or a professional PC tech to do the job. If you are sure that you can do the job yourself, i will provide the guidance.

Thank you for your reply.

Before I try to open the back and see if it's clean etc. The other day someone else was using the laptop and he said it froze so he pressed ctrl - alt - del (which usually does nothing when I press it when it freezes) and a blue screen popped up saying there was a load of registry errors, but he couldn't see what it said as it was only there for a few seconds.

He downloaded AVG PC tuneup or something like that before I was around to say not to until I'd asked on here, it got rid of a load of shortcuts etc that didn't work he said - but the laptop is still freezing. Could the registry errors be anything bad doing this, and the heat is just not helping?

A while ago I uninstalled a toolbar I didn't want and didn't know where it came from and it did something to the laptop, this was the problem then:

I don't know if this is anything to do with any registry errors as it did seem to wipe off a lot off the laptop.

Hi

It is a big misconception that Windows registry became corrupted over time and need to clean and fix. In fact registry cleaning and repair programs do more harm to your system instead of fixing it. Bleeping Computers do not support the use of any kind of registry cleaning programs. If any one knows which entries in Windows registry are unneeded, that is only Microsoft and not some third party bloatware developers.

Yes, there might be some malwares or potentially unwanted apps in your system which needs to be cleaned. But your laptop's primary issue is overheating and it need to be fixed first. To clean the malwares you can open a help request topic in the Am i infected  ?  section.

Thank you very much for your reply again.

I never install any cleaning programs without consulting people that know computers better - some around me however like to think they know what to do - he's been told what you said and won't install anything else onto any computer. I will uninstall all that he installed.

Regarding the cleaning - we tried to take the back off the laptop today lots of screws needed to be taken out to get the back off but we couldn't get it off, I've tried to find videos

online of someone taking the back off but can't find any yet, will try and look again.

Will also post a topic on the am I infected section.
