I started my computer today and found some big problems....

Once logged in, I noticed that my desktop background had disappeared and was just black. I usually run about 5 desktop  gadgets, and they have all disappeared as well and seem to have been deleted from my pc. All my taskbar links no longer work and I get an error saying "Can't open this item: It might have been moved, renamed, or deleted". On top of that, all the programs in the start menu programs folder are gone, and I can't find them in explorer.exe either!

I booted into safe mode and ran MSE Antivirus full scan, nothing found. I also ran full scans with Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and Spybot Search and Destroy and nothing was found!

I'm not sure what to do now, as I had my PC set up just right and tons of settings which have just vanished!

I do not have any system restore points set up.

I'm tempted to just wipe my SSD which only has my OS and some small apps, and start a fresh install. If I were to do this, would it destroy any virus that I may have picked up?

I only use this PC for gaming through Steam, and watching Netflix, youtube, light web-browsing. I never visit any "unsafe" sites or do any torrenting! What's going on?

What should I do?!

EVGA GTX 670

Well, I think I'm just going to go ahead and wipe my SSD, start a fresh install.

Really is a pain, because of all the settings I tweaked to make Win7 run just how I like. No viruses or spy/malware found after running multiple scans, not finding any errors anywhere. Tried logging in with different user, same problems. Tried running unhide.exe in case this has something to do with FakeHDD, no luck. I have no clue why all my settings, links, start menu programs and folders have all disappeared/don't work. I don't know what else to do!

I will definitely make a system image this time when I get it all set up again.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I'll wait until tomorrow before I wipe the drive. Any suggestions please!

Are you running a RAID?  If not, why are your Marvel RAID software installed?

Uninstall Spybot...you have SAS installed, which many think does a better job than Spybot.  TeaTimer seems to be running and it is known to cause problems on some systems.

Although I'm certainly no expert...I see no evidence of any hard drive or overheating problems (common causes for system problems).

Stramge installation reflected...Dual-Core Optimizer (Version: 1.1.4.0169), when you have neither an AMD CPU nor a dual-core.

I don't see anything which would lead me to believe that Windows or the partition/file structure...have incurred damage preventing proper function.

If it were me...I'd make the adjustments I suggested...then run chkdsk /r command...and possibly create another user account to test the premise that your user profile may be damaged.  Generally, a user should get signs of such but there are few ironclad laws in the world of computing, IMO...and you did not mention any onscreen error message that might provide clues.

Thanks Louis, sorry it took a while to respond.

I went ahead and reformatted my SSD and did a fresh install of Windows 7. I don't know why I had those drivers installed, this is the first PC I've built myself and wasn't quite sure which drivers I needed.

So now I'm curious, do I need to install any of these SATA RAID/AHCI drivers for my motherboard? http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4144#dl

I already installed Chipset, LAN, USB and Audio drivers.

You only need drivers...if they are not installed or the installed ones are damaged.

To see if any or not installed...access Device Manager and see if there are any yellow or red markings beside any listed items.  If a given system function (video, audio, etc.) is not working properly...you need to install drivers provided for your motherboard.

How Do I Open Device Manager in Win 7
