Coworker brought me his wife's laptop and mentioned that they had some kind of popup that started scanning his system and reported some infections.  I'm thinking some kind of Virus Scareware.  He was unable to tell me anything more and I have not seen any scanning popup since receiving the laptop.

Here is what I've done so far and what I've found:

- Installed Microsoft Security Essentials.  (No signs of any prior AV or MW software installed.)

- While it was updating I launched an instance of MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.

= MSE dectected and intercepted malicious files before MBAM obtained control of the files to scan itself.

* Trojan:Win32/Sirefef!cfg

* Rogue:Win32/FakeRean

* Exploit:Java/CVE-2012-0507

* TrojanDropper:Win32/Sirefef

* TrojanDropper:Win32/Sirefef.gen!E

^ Infections found at C/Owner/AppData/Local/Temp ... Nothing looked to be needed there...so I deleted the directory

- Changed the Temp folder options to reveal protected operating system files.

- More files and folders showed up in Temp including a hidden InstallFlashPlayer.exe of about 88k (trying to remember from memory).  I purged the directory again.

- Rebooted and scanned with MSE

* Exploit:Java/CVE-2012-1723

* Exploit:Java/CVE-2012-0507

^ Above files were found in a Java container file.  I let MSE "remove" above files.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry I don't have any more information on the "scanning" popup that she says she saw.  Im at the point now I just want to make sure her laptop is clean.
Hello CLStan
These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with one of these just skip it and move on to the next one.
-AdwCleaner-
Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
-Junkware-Removal-Tool-
Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
When they are complete let me have the two reports and let me know how things are running.
Here are the outputs of both of those scans.  NOTE: It seems that this laptop had pending Windows Update patches to apply...so on reboot from the ADW Cleaner...the laptop applied the new patches.  I don't know if that will change any of the previous scans.  Let me know if I need to rescan.
Hello CLStan
I Would like you to do the following.
Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.
Run Combofix:
You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)
Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<
Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.
You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer
"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?
I hope this is the log file you are looking for.  I had to search for it because it wasn't in the directory of the exe nor on the root of C.
Still not seeing page popups like the owner described.  But in IE I am seeing a video ad popup.  Even on the BleepingComputer website.  The video ads look to be coming from something called ArcadeSafari.  (They don't popup when I use Chrome.)
Hello CLStan
Combofix did not finish that is why you could not find it
Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.
Boot into Safe Mode
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.
Hello CLStan
At this time I would like you to run this script for me and it is a good time to check out the computer to see if there is anything else that needs to be addressed.
:Run CFScript:
Please start by opening Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:
ClearJavaCache::
Folder::
c:\program files (x86)\ArcadeSafari Games
File::
c:\windows\Tasks\Arcadesafari.job
Driver::
nseonbha
Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt
Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
CFScriptB-4.gif
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer
"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
    • report from Combofix
    • let me know of any problems you may have had
    • How is the computer doing now after running the script?
{This is being written from a different computer}
After running the CFScript.txt on ComboFix...it ran and rebooted and then presented with a report.
I am unable to load IE, Chrome, or any other kind of .EXE (or it looks like any other extension) due to the following error...
"Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion."
As a wild hair test...I pulled up the Windows Task Manager.  I CAN do the "New Task (Run...) and whatever I enter WILL come up without error.  (ie: Chrome, Regedit, Notepad, Explorer)
Let me switch back to the sick computer and I'll try to copy and past the last ComboFix log.
I'm sorry...my misunderstanding.
In the process of ComboFix running it's script...it rebooted and then gave me the log.  So I thought that was the reboot that you were talking about.
Ok...rebooted.
Still getting a pop-over video ads whenever IE is used.  (I know to not use IE...but they might not.)
Hello CLStan
I would like you to try and run these next.
TDSSKiller
Please download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.
  • Put a checkmark beside loaded modules.
  • A reboot will be needed to apply the changes. Do it.
  • TDSSKiller will launch automatically after the reboot. Also your computer may seem very slow and unusable. This is normal. Give it enough time to load your background programs.
  • Then click on Change parameters in TDSSKiller.
  • Check all boxes then click OK.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • more than one report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". The one that I need is the larger one. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
    Note** this report can be very long - so if the website gives you an error saying it is to long you may attache it
    If the forum still complains about it being to long send me everything that is at the end of the report after where it says
    ==================
    Scan finished
    ==================
and I will see if I want to see the whole report
I'm having to attach the TDSS Log...
RogueKiller made 2 files...but neither were "[2]".  I assume you wanted the 2nd one created (per timestamp)...I will attach that one.  If you need the other...let me know.
