I have Windows XP (service pack 2) The version on Movie Maker (when I click on about) is Version 5.1 (even though I am pretty sure it's called version 2.1) because when I click here:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/get-movie-maker-download

it says that.

HOWEVER, the problem is I am able to work on a project for about 5 minutes and then all of a sudden it stops working and says "not responding" I thought maybe I could upgrade to newest version for Windows XP.... is this possible??

Thanks

Stacey

Download and install SP3 then visit Windows Update to install all the SP3 only updates but first read tricky300's entry in this thread. It's about halfway down the thread.

I upgraded to windows sp3.

Then after I saw an article about something you are supposed to do before you upgrade :( (if I have an HP Pavilion computer - which I do)

Is this going to really effect how the computer works...?? See below:

Windows Updates no longer works until you have service pack 3 installed. To overcome this problem you need to get to SP3 manually.

Before you install SP3 read this article…

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717

…and if your PC is an HP Pavilion, Presario or Media Center and has an AMD processor you need to install this patch before installing SP3…

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=uk&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=pv-60484-2

…to find out if you have an AMD processor...

  • Hold down the Windows key (between Ctrl and Alt) and hit the Pause Break key or click Start, click Run, type winver and hit enter
  • Your processor type is shown in the Computer: section

Then install SP3 by downloading and running from...

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=24

…you can ignore the text that says that it is for network installations and also ignore the text advising Windows/Microsoft Update if only updating one PC. Ignore any recommendation from Microsoft to use Windows Updates.

Hi -

I now assume that you have since updated, and how is the computer performing ??

Along with the link you gave, there are a few items at the top of the XP Forum area to read.

Was there any reason for this computer not updating earlier ?? About 3 or 4 years ago.

If you now installed SP3 OK, you need to check for Windows Updates to make the computer fully updated

Thank You -

You got lucky that you didn't end up with a reboot loop. I specifically said to read that before updating to SP3. Since it installed OK you're fine. Do as I already told you and noknojon told you and fully patch your computer.

Now that you have your reply from .X. you do need to go to Windows Updates and start installing updates.

There will be dozens of them, so only install the express ones that you are OK with.

Select a few each time and only do these, then go back for more later --

Thanks -

.X. I appreciate for the links and tools you have given me. However, I am not a computer tech or anything in the same field. I am simply a girl, trying to update her computer, there is a lot of computer words, phrases etc...  for instance "noknojon told you and fully patch your computer". that I do not understand, thus that is why I registered with this website. If you don't want to help don't reply to my posts, its that simple, no need to get angry or frustrated. What may seem simple to you is not true to everyone.  Basically, it comes down to me making the decision -- if it works then great, if it doesn't then crap! If there are people on this website that can walk me through things I need to do-- great, if not, what do you think I am going to do? Cry and wine on the blogs... absolutely not, I would just cancel my registration....

PS- if people are mean, rude or crude please know that the blog will be dismissed, and assume that I didn't even read the post. I am looking for help not attitude.

Mod Edit:  Deleted unnecessarty data posted and not requested - Hamluis.

Now that I have upgraded to sp3, and considering that my windows movie maker (version 5.1) stops responding every couple minutes is there a way to upgrade or fix it.

(when i add a song it stops responding, or when I add an effect it stops responding, when I go to play what i have created so far it stops responding..... then I shut it down and open again etc.... )

Granted I know a lot of people have a hard time using windows movie maker (any version) (cause I always see it it forums) whats that point of having a cool program like this if it stops responding??

As you can see for someone like me, I can't explain the frustration level for something like this. (there always seems to be a million paths, and I am sure most of them are a waste of time, because when you download this you gotta do this, or if you do this blah blah... I don't know... see below)

When I go to the Microsoft website this is what is says:

This version of Movie Maker isn't available for Windows XP.Windows Movie Maker 2.1 is available if you install Windows XPService Pack 2.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/movie-maker#t1=overview

Another website says this:

Windows XP

Windows Movie Maker 2.1
Learn more

Included in Windows XP SP2 and SP3. Get the latest service pack for your PC.

Note: Movie Maker 2.1 is not available separately from the Windows XP service packs.
