Background:

Running Win 7 Home 64 bit on a Dell laptop computer.

Malicious Software Removal Tool indicated that I had something like Trojan b 32 bit or 64 bit  Tool said it removed or cleaned or something.  Don't know how to get back to that screen/information.

Noticed that MSE icon missing from System Tray

Under Control Panel, Program & Features, MSE icon is missing.  When try to uninstall - "You do not have sufficient access to uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials"

If I try to install MSE, get error that it is already installed.

Security Updated for Windows 7 X64-Based System (KB2847927) failed to install.  "Windows Update encountered an unknown error code 800780005"

I've been through the Preparation Guide for Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help:

1) Backup - all my data is on a NAS drive.

2) Not all slow computers are caused by Malware.  Computer is not especially slow.

3) Create a free account - I did

4) Enable topic reply notification by default - I did

5) Enable a firewall - Tried to turn on Windows Defender (as suggested in Action Center)  Receive error that "Action Center can't turn on Windows Defender.  Please try again later.

6) Download and run DDS (says may not work on 64 bit).  When try to download get "dds.com contained a virus and was deleted."

7) Create a new malware removal topic (I'm doing that) and post the DDS logs (I couldn't get DDS to download).

Certainly open to advice on how to proceed.

Thanks,

Mike

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

step1.gif In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/500893 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

step2.gifIf you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from the following link if you no longer have it available and save it to your destop.

    DDS.com Download Link
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control can be found HERE.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

I do still need help.  The problem I am having is as described in my original post.  An additional piece of data is that I can not download anything to the laptop.  I have been able to run DDS.COM by downloading on another computer and putting the file on a USB drive and then run it on the problem laptop.

The DDS.txt file contents is posted below and the attach.txt file is attached.

I do have my Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Reinstallation DVD.

Thanks,

Mike

Hello mikemctx

I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.

Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

I would like you to run this program for me.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

I sure appreciate your help Gringo.

At this point:

MSE icon missing from System Tray

Under Control Panel, Program & Features, MSE icon is missing.  When try to uninstall - "You do not have sufficient access to uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials"

If I try to install MSE, et error that it is already installed.

Can't turn on Firewall.  Tried to turn on Windows Defender (as suggested in Action Center)  Receive error that "Action Center can't turn on Windows Defender.  Please try again later.

When I try to download a file I get error that file "contained a virus and was deleted"  I am able to run your tools by downloading on another computer to a USB drive and copying it to the problem laptop desktop.

Here is the FRST.txt log and I am attaching Addition.txt as you requested.

Hello mikemctx

I need you to download this script I have made for you --> Attached File  fixlist.txt   873bytes   13 downloads

It needs to be saved Next to the "Farbar Recovery Scan Tool" (FRST) program (If asked to overwrite existing one please allow)

Run FRST again but this time press the Fix button just once and wait.

When finished, it will make a log (fixlog.txt) next to FRST. Please copy and paste the content of this file to your reply.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

Gringo - Thanks for the quick response.

I can now access MSE and there is an icon in the system tray.

My Windows Firewall is now on.

I am now able to download files and I no longer get the error message "contained a virus and was deleted"

So the issues I was aware of seem to be addressed.  Is there anything else I should be checking or cleaning up?

Pasted below if my fixlog.txt per your request.

Hello mikemctx

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with one of these just skip it and move on to the next one.

-AdwCleaner-

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
-Junkware-Removal-Tool-

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
When they are complete let me have the two reports and let me know how things are running.

Sure appreciate your help Gringo!

How things are running:  Everything seems normal except:

1) The Microsoft Security Essentials Icon does not show in the Tray after start-up even though I selected to "Show icon and notifications"   If I manually start MSE, then the icon shows in the tray.  It appears as if MSE isn't starting up automatically.

2) A Full Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials says it detected 6 potential threats, all with an Alert level of Severe and a Status of Active.  The 6 potential threats are:

Trojan:Win64/Sirefef

Trojan:Win32/Sirefef.AN

Trojan:Win64/Sirefef.AK

Trojan:Win32/Sirefef!cfg

Trojan:Win64/Sirefef.AI

Explot:Java/CVE-2012-1723

I did not take any action as I follow only your directions at this point.  For reference the first 5 are in a directory C:\FRST\Quarantine ...

Hello mikemctx

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Thanks Gringo!

Had no problem running ComboFix

How things are running:  Everything seems normal.

I have seen that you frequently recommend removing Java.  Just as a heads-up, I need Java to run an application.  I am a major volunteer at our church and our AC system is managed by a Java based web system - so it's not going to be an option for me to remove Java.

Here's the combofix.txt file, as you requested.

Hello mikemctx

At this time I would like you to run this script for me and it is a good time to check out the computer to see if there is anything else that needs to be addressed.

:Run CFScript:

Please start by opening Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
CFScriptB-4.gif
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
    • report from Combofix
    • let me know of any problems you may have had
    • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

When running ComboFix - it said there was an updated ComboFix available and asked if I wanted to download it.  Since you didn't mention downloading a new version, I said no.

When running ComboFix - it prompted me to disable MSE, which I did.

Everything appears to be running fine on my laptop at this time.

Thanks for your continued help.

Hello

These logs are looking allot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

NOTE** Because of the cleanup process some of the programs I have listed may not be in add/remove anymore this is fine just move to the next item on the list.

You can remove these programs using add/remove or you can use the free uninstaller from Revo (Revo does allot better of a job)
  • Programs to remove

    • Adobe Reader 9.4.4
      Java™ 6 Update 32

Please download and install Revo Uninstaller Free
  • Double click Revo Uninstaller to run it.
  • From the list of programs double click on The Program to remove
  • When prompted if you want to uninstall click Yes.
  • Be sure the Moderate option is selected then click Next.
  • The program will run, If prompted again click Yes
  • when the built-in uninstaller is finished click on Next.
  • Once the program has searched for leftovers click Next.
  • Check/tick the bolded items only on the list then click Delete
  • when prompted click on Yes and then on next.
  • put a check on any folders that are found and select delete
  • when prompted select yes then on next
  • Once done click Finish.
.

Install Java:

Please go here to install Java
  • click on the Free Java Download Button
  • click on Agree and start Free download
  • click on Run
  • click on run again
  • click on install
  • when install is complete click on close
Clean Out Temp Files
  • This small application you may want to keep and use once a week to keep the computer clean.

    Download CCleaner from here CCleaner
    • Run the installer to install the application.
    • When it gives you the option to install Yahoo toolbar uncheck the box next to it.
    • Run CCleaner. default settings are fine
    • Click Run Cleaner.
    • Close CCleaner.
Run Malwarebytes

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

PROBLEM:

I followed all your instructions.  A major problem resulted in that I can no longer control the 8 HVAC units at our church.  The web based / Java based control system provided by a third party vendor does not like updated versions of Java.  That is the reason I was running Java 6 Update 32.  When another meeting gets scheduled at the church I don't believe I have any option other than to uninstall Java 7 Update 25 and reinstall Java 6 Update 32 so I can schedule the AC to run (I'm located in Florida so it is rather hot here).  I recognize that I have increased vulnerability by running an older version of Java.  I'll try to put this off as long as possible to await your advice - but soon I will have no choice but to reload an older version of Java.

HOW IS THE COMPUTER DOING:

Everything seems fine except for the problem described immediately above.

I will await further instructions.

Thanks,

Mike
