 Please do the following steps.

:step1: Replace the SATA cable of both SSD and HDD.

:step2: Download Seatool For DOS and run a long test with it on the HDD.

Refer this link if you don't know how to burn an ISO file to CD -  http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/201431en

You can temporarily disconnect the SSD before running Seatool.

Report the message displayed by Seatool in next reply.

:step3: You are running two AV programs at the same time. AVG and MSE. This will result in unwanted behaviors including crashes and freezes.

Remove AVG completely by using the official removal tool for proper uninstalling.

Hi, Thanks for suggestions. I erased AVG but could not run successfully Seatools. my SSD (which resides my OS) was not detected.

Looking into windows reliability moniter it seems things started turning for the bad after this was installed : Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.153.1309.0)

I honestly did not know I had another Antivirus running other than AVG. I am still getting the freezes then the black screen with "reboot and select proper boot device". The only other thing i changed was to change my ssd from IDE to AHCI, I had to flash MB since windows did not update drivers (my bad i had the bootable seatooldisk) since i crashed.

Is there any other tool to verify health of my SSD? I am copying minitoolbox last 10 errors in case something new can be seen

Hi -

Sorry to add a quick option while Anshad is looking after you -

At the very least, run a standard Disk Check >

Run a Disk Check on your C: drive in Windows Vista or Windws 7:
 • Click the Start button and select Computer

Right-click on C: or your main hard drive, and select Properties

• Click on the Tools tab

• Under Error-checking click the Check Now... button and click Continue at any U A C prompt

•Mark the 2 boxes next to Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors

•Click on the Start button

•When the message box pops up, click the Schedule disk check button and Restart your computer

•Once your computer restarts it will check the drive, don't press any keys so that it is allowed to do so

This will take (on average) 60 to 90 minutes to run the 5 stages, so please let it run.

On completion, your computer will boot back to normal mode again.

Do not Force a Restart while the scan is running, and for laptops, make sure it is plugged into a power source, not just battery

Thank You -

Hi

Seatools won't work with solid state drives. It is the official tool to test the Seagate hard disk drive. I suspect that drive is faulty. Sorry for the confusion. Please follow the below steps .

:step1: Unplug the SSD. Keep the HDD plugged in. (make sure to replace all the SATA cables first )

:step2: Enter in to the BIOS setup and change SATA mode to IDE (otherwise the tool may failed to detect the drive  )

:step3: Boot from the Seatool CD and run the long test i described earlier. This will verify the health status of the HDD.

Let me know the result of the test (PASSED or FAILED )

:step4: Update your SSD firmware.

Crucial is notorious for buggy firmwares which causes various issues. Update it by downloading the bootable update CD from the below link.

http://www.crucial.com/firmware/m4/070H/ISO_crucial-c400.070H.07.00.zip

Here is the guide with detailed instructions on how to update firmware. Read it carefully first.

http://www.crucial.com/firmware/m4/070H/Crucial_m4_Firmware_Update_070H.pdf

Updating firmware is important for an SSD for stable operation.

You can change the SATA mode to AHCI after updating firmware and testing the HDD with Seatool. Otherwise Windows may not boot.

:step5:  Install Intel IRST and chipset drivers from the below link.

http://66.226.78.21/downloadsite/drivers/Intel/INF/INF_Win7-64_Win7_Vista64_Vista_XP64_XP(9.2.0.1015).zip

http://66.226.78.21/downloadsite/drivers/Intel/SATA/RapidStorage_Win7-64_Win7_Vista64_Vista_XP64_XP(v10.6.0.1002).zip

:step6: Uninstall Marvell SATA controller from Control Panel --> Programs and restart the system. Now download and install the latest driver from the below link.

http://www.marvell.com/support/downloads/driverSearchResults.do;jsessionid=dTycRjQWb08gvJpQbwvxGdC5LLQmkbhjGlKhv0PlKyXrm7YTgYNZ!-813820292#

Report how the system works after performing the above steps. Also i want to know the SATA port number in which the SSD is plugged.

Make sure to complete all the above steps before reporting back.

Thanks guys for all your help. So windows 7 lives on my SSD that is connected to Sata_0. I mwas able to successfully do a few windows updates, remove Sweet cakes virus then updated my SSD firmware. I was however, unable to get the seatool to work (i guess it is because its not for SSD's?) I did run though a Checkdsk and no problems to report on my ssd.

I ordered a 128 GB samsung Pro SSD that i might just return if my pc holds stable. (needed a back up as i use this PC for work so long downtime is not an option and i really like SSD speed with OS.)

Can i just disable Marvell i dont think i have anytyhing plugged there and heard its not as fast. I will also set Drive back to ACHI and report if issue is fixed

thanks again

Hi

Yes you heard right. Marvell controllers and SSD drives are always problematic. I referred the user manual of the motherboard and found port 0 and 1 are the Intel SATA 3 ports and that are the ones you should use. For your reference i marked them in the below picture.

asrock-p67.jpg

For the proper operation of your system, make sure the following steps are followed.

:step1: Use only port 0 and 1 for connecting SSD drives. You can use SATA 2 ports (the blue ones ) to connect optical drives. The upper two white ports are Marvell ones. Stay away from them.

:step2: Make sure to use the AHCI mode as SSD require it for full speed.

:step3: Always keep the SSD firmware update. (which i believe you already did )

:step4: Make sure to install the chipset and IRST drivers from my previous post.

:step5: Replace the SATA cables with quality ones. Also make sure to set the SSD as the primary boot device in BIOS.

You can use the Windows version of Seatool to verify the health status of the hard disk.

http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/

User guide : http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/202435en

Unfortunately there are no manufacturer's diagnostic tools available for solid state drives. Only exception is Intel. They provide a toolbox to test their SSD drives. I recommend Intel as the second SSD for your system.

Please report how the system works now. Also make sure to test the hard disk and provide the feedback when the long test completes.
