Hello Forum

This is my 1st post out side of the into.   I have been reading a lot on this site and I need some help with where and how to start.  I know very little about how computers work and am very excited to learn from the step I must take to maximize my PC.  At this time things are running very very slow.  I got this computer from a friend that builds them so I think its a very good one, but am not sure.   I would love to clean it up, delete all the things I'm not going to be using and protect myself.  I don't think I have a virus, I have been running MSE, but I could be wrong.  I am running XP Pro with SP 3.  I have all my windows updates (everyone of them but the languages).  My computer has an AMD Athlon™64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5400+ 2.81 GHz, 3.00 GB of Ram (not sure if thats good?)  I use the internet a lot.  I use iTunes, KeePass, Evernote, Dropbox, Office, and Dragon Naturally Speaking.  What should I do next?

Start...at the beginning of the words by Quietman :).

If something is suggested that makes sense and that you can accomplish or check...do so.

If you read something that you consider unapplicable or don't understand...ask and the membership here will try to enlighten you or clarify.

Louis,

I have done all you suggested and my PC is running very well.  I have learned a lot too.  Thank you so much!  I do have a few follow up questions. Should I ask them here or start a new post?

Ask away :).  If they can't be answered here, I'll let you know.

Louis,

Thank you for you help!  My question is now that I think my computer is running well, how can I be sure?  It seems ok to me but I don't think I would be able to tell if I was wrong.   I see file folders that I think might have been from the last owner but am not sure.  I now only have 25 running programs, down from 56 so thats a good thing.  I just want to delete everything that is not need and disable anything that is not needed.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Many users go overboard fiddling with their PCs thinking there is something wrong when there isn't. That can create problems. That seems like the direction you are heading. If you have questions, ask. But resist the temptation to fiddle around needlessly.

Ok, thanks.  I just want to learn what to look for.  I also wanted to know how to remove Combo Fix, and understand how to read my event logo and fix any errors I find.

A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. You don't need to know any of that stuff. It's only going to get you into trouble. If you have a specific problem, post it on BC and Louis and the other experts will advise you accordingly. I've been around BC since 2007 and have never tried to do what you are trying to do. But I've seen enough users come to BC after fiddling with their PCs and mindlessly turn them into expensive doorstops. When I see guys like you talk about Combofix, a red flag goes up.
