Hi. Firstly, I just wanted to point out that I've tried using the DDS tool mentioned in the guide and it just gets stuck every time and no logs are generated.

That is the same problem I have with the rest of the programs on my computer. Task manager crashes and never works, counter-strike source crashes my entire computer ocassionally and google chrome does so too. I am forced to hold down the power button to switch off the computer.

Now, this is my father's laptop and I don't know exactly what he has installed on it. I know he's got Mcafee installed, as well as BT protect but apart from that I don't really understand it properly. This is because of the confusing windows 8 interface which I cannot get my head around. Can you recommend tests I can do, which will enable me  to go through my machine, clear out all the junk and update it properly?

I'm pretty sure he has spyware because of the survey pop-ups and general slowness of the computer. However, I'm sure he has some hardware problems on the computer because of the constant java update prompts and other strangeness which I've never seen before. (I'm putting a lot of my blame on windows 8).

Many thanks in advance.

edit: I've tried running a few scans but they wouldn't work. Furthermore, I tried using disk cleanup but nothing happened (as far as I can tell). God, windows 8 is annoying haha. I can't turn on mcafee anti-spyware or virus protection for some reason.
